Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has urged traders in Old Dhaka to strengthen fire safety measures and keep roads accessible to emergency vehicles ahead of the dry season.
The call came at a meeting organised by the city corporation at the Moulvibazar Traders' Association in Chawkbazar today (25 October) to raise awareness about fire risks and accident prevention, according to the press release.
Speaking as the chief guest, DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md Abdus Salam sought traders' and residents' cooperation to reduce fire risks, improve roads and drainage, and restore the area's traditional trading environment.
"Old Dhaka is a densely populated and important commercial area. Chemicals have caused devastating fires here in the past. Alongside ensuring fire safety in every market and commercial building, it is essential to keep access routes clear so the Fire Service can respond quickly during emergencies," he said.
Salam said shops and illegal encroachments blocked traffic on many roads in Old Dhaka and hampered emergency rescue operations. He called on the administration, traders and residents to work together to address the problem.
On infrastructure and civic services, he said the city corporation would coordinate with relevant agencies to tackle drainage, water discharge, and road problems.
"The city corporation is committed to improving Old Dhaka's environment by keeping streetlights operational and strengthening cleanliness efforts," he said.
Salam added that he had discussed plans for the area's overall development with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Emphasising the need to restore the trading heritage of Moulvibazar, Chawkbazar, Sowarighat and Sadarghat, he urged traders to contribute practical suggestions.
"Do not just raise problems; suggest solutions as well. We will prioritise your considered opinions when drawing up plans," he said.
In the absence of elected councillors, Salam also stressed the need to revive Old Dhaka's traditional panchayat system of neighbourhood councils to help address social and civic problems.
At the meeting, traders were asked to comply with fire safety regulations at their establishments, keep safety equipment operational, regularly inspect electricity and gas lines, and coordinate with the authorities when responding to emergencies.
Senior DSCC officials, leaders of the Moulvibazar Traders' Association and representatives of various businesses attended the meeting.
