Indiana football faced its biggest test of the season Saturday at Nebraska, trailing by 11 points with 11 minutes remaining in a hostile environment. The Hoosiers responded with a complete team effort, rallying for a 20-17 victory that reinforced their ability to win when things are not going their way.
Head coach Curt Cignetti reflected on the hard-fought road win during his Monday press conference, emphasizing the resilience his team displayed after struggling throughout the first half.
“It's a gut check,” Cignetti said. “It would've been easy to let that game get away from you in the first half, and we hung in there, so good win.”
Indiana found its offensive spark in the second half, with wide receiver Nick Marsh emerging as the difference-maker. After catching two passes for 51 yards in the first half, Marsh finished with six receptions for 187 yards and two touchdowns, both coming in the fourth quarter.
His explosive performance helped Indiana erase the deficit and secure another important victory as the defending national champions continued their undefeated start to the season.
While Marsh provided the offensive fireworks, Indiana's defense also played a critical role in keeping the Hoosiers within striking distance. Mario Landino, Tobi Osunsanmi and Preston Zachman were among the defensive standouts as Indiana held Nebraska to 17 points and delivered the stops necessary to complete the comeback.
Still, Cignetti acknowledged that the defense had plenty to clean up after a difficult opening half.
“We didn't play well really in any of the three phases in this first half,” Cignetti said. “A lot of our issues were assignments, and they got the ball out there in space and we had a hard time getting off blocks.”
The Hoosiers eventually settled down, executed better and gave themselves an opportunity to take control late. Their response was particularly important given the challenges of playing in Nebraska's notoriously loud home environment.
Cignetti said the victory was valuable not only because it kept Indiana undefeated but also because it provided another opportunity to navigate adversity. The Hoosiers previously escaped a tight contest against Northwestern, and the Nebraska comeback offered another example of their ability to finish close games.
“It's important ... to be in a tight game like that and win, especially on the road with all that adversity,” Cignetti said.
However, Indiana cannot afford to dwell on the victory for long. The Hoosiers now turn their attention to Ohio State, which visits Bloomington for a matchup featuring two of the nation's top teams.
Cignetti praised the Buckeyes' coaching staff, talent and overall efficiency, singling out wide receiver Jeremiah Smith as a particularly difficult matchup.
“He's a freak,” Cignetti said. “We're going to have to do a great job on him.”
Indiana's comeback at Nebraska demonstrated the toughness required to survive a challenging road game. Against Ohio State, the Hoosiers will need that same resilience, along with a more consistent performance across all three phases, to protect their undefeated record and prove they belong among college football's elite for the second year in a row.
