Over 20 students have been suspended from MET College of Arts and Science, an unaided college affiliated with the University of Calicut, at Nadapuram in Kozhikode, Keralam, following a clash between two groups over a social media post.
According to college authorities, 16 of those suspended are third-year undergraduate students and six others are in their first year.
The dispute between the two groups reportedly began on Friday over a social media post. Following this, one of the junior students was allegedly beaten up by seniors on the road leading to the college on Monday, the police said. The incident soon developed into a clash between the two groups as more students joined in. Visuals of the fight were also shared in social media groups, and many parents reached the area.
However, the police’s initial attempts to bring the situation under control failed, and additional personnel had to be called in. Though the injured students were admitted to nearby hospitals, some of them clashed there as well. The police subsequently took some students into custody and registered cases against six of them.
Meanwhile, cases were registered against at least 10 other students after another clash was reported at Thooneri in the same area.
