Fresh questions have emerged over the quality and safety of urban infrastructure developed under the Agartala Smart City initiative after two women reportedly sustained injuries in separate incidents when their feet became trapped in damaged drain covers at different locations in the city during the Durga Puja festivities.
The incidents, occurring within a short span of each other, have sparked public concern over the condition of pedestrian facilities, particularly covered drains, footpaths and manhole covers in some of the city's busiest areas. The episodes have also triggered criticism from residents who allege that several civic infrastructure projects remain incomplete or poorly maintained despite undergoing renovation.
The first incident took place around noon on Navami at Colonel Chowmuhani, a busy commercial and pedestrian hub in central Agartala. According to local accounts, a woman was walking over a covered drain when the manhole cover beneath her reportedly gave way, causing her foot to become trapped inside the opening. The situation prompted an immediate rescue effort by local residents, who rushed to her aid and reportedly used cutting equipment to remove a portion of the iron structure before she could be freed.
The incident created panic among passers-by and raised concerns about the structural integrity of pedestrian infrastructure in high-footfall areas, especially during the festive season when thousands of people use city footpaths and roads daily.
In a separate incident reported near the Lichubagan water tank along Airport Road, another woman allegedly encountered a similar problem while walking across a section of drain infrastructure that residents claim was either inadequately covered or left unfinished. The occurrence further intensified concerns regarding public safety and the condition of civic amenities developed under ongoing urban renewal projects.
The back-to-back incidents have generated considerable public reaction, with many residents expressing frustration over what they describe as inadequate attention to pedestrian safety. Discussions and criticism reportedly gained momentum on social media platforms, where users questioned the quality of construction and maintenance associated with several Smart City works.
Many residents have argued that broken drain covers, missing manholes and unfinished footpaths pose serious risks, particularly for women, elderly citizens and children. They contend that while visible road improvements often receive priority, equal attention must be paid to pedestrian infrastructure that directly affects public safety.
The incidents have also revived debate surrounding road and footpath renovation works undertaken ahead of this year's Durga Puja celebrations. Earlier, Agartala Municipal Corporation had announced plans for the renovation of several major city roads before the festival season. However, complaints regarding patchwork repairs, incomplete finishing and alleged construction deficiencies have continued to surface from various localities.
Airport Road has emerged as a particular point of concern for residents. Although the road has already been inaugurated, local observations indicate that portions of the accompanying pedestrian infrastructure remain unfinished. Residents have pointed to locations where manhole covers are allegedly missing, footpath tiling work remains incomplete and finishing work appears yet to be fully executed.
Concerns have also been raised regarding visible damage reported on sections of the bituminous road surface and portions of recently laid footpath tiles. Citizens have questioned whether a comprehensive inspection of the project was conducted before its inauguration and whether adequate quality-control measures were enforced during construction.
With two separate accidents drawing attention to the issue within days, residents are now demanding a detailed assessment of pedestrian infrastructure across the city to prevent similar incidents and ensure that public safety remains a priority in ongoing urban development projects.
