A new public health advisory council in Norway is calling for higher taxes and new age limits on the purchase of tobacco products, plus a ban on tax-free sales of tobacco and nicotine products at Norwegian airports. Those are just some of the council’s proposed restrictions to cut back on nicotine use, especially among youth.
The council (Folkehelsepolitisk råd) was formed last winter to advise the state health ministry. Its 12 members are concerned about a new rise in the numbers of Norwegians smoking and in the use of both chewing tobacco and vapour products. Norway has had strict anti-smoking laws for years, but the council claims more minors are smoking now than they were 10 years ago.
It’s urging a ban on sales of nicotine products to those under the age of 21 years. The council also wants to further raise cigarette prices, cut back on outlets for tobacco sales and require smoke-free areas also outdoors at cafés, restaurants, festivals, public transport stops and swimming areas.
