Fighting for a maiden Formula 1 world championship can be an excruciating experience. The history books are rife with nerve-wracking title deciders, from Lewis Hamilton's last lap pass on Timo Glock in Brazil 2008 to Fernando Alonso being lured into a strategic trap in Abu Dhabi 2010. Little more needs to be said about Abu Dhabi 2021.
Kimi Antonelli won't need to go through any of that as he gets his first of six match points to become F1's youngest-ever world champion at the age of only 20. And he has earned that luxury with his staggering consistency, backing up his season-leading eight grand prix wins that have netted him a comfortable 102-point cushion on Mercedes team-mate George Russell.
All Antonelli needs to do in Austin is to hold serve, avoid calamity, and then take a more straightforward opportunity over the remainder of the American triple-header in Mexico or Brazil.

How can Antonelli become F1 world champion at US GP?But as his first mathematical chance arrives this very weekend, it's only normal the young Italian was peppered with questions over what could be, and what it would all mean, as F1 set up shop at Austin's Circuit of the Americas.
"We had a meeting with Bono [race engineer Peter Bonnington] this morning and we said to just have fun and always have the same mindset as I had all year," Antonelli said. "One race at a time and just try to do the best I can every race weekend and then we'll see. But of course, if I do things well, then the result will come.
"We'll try to finish the job properly and then we can enjoy the rest. But for sure, it will be an incredible achievement."

What's been so remarkable about Antonelli's title campaign isn't that he was capable of it, as that's the reason why Mercedes put its faith in the Bologna native as Hamilton's long-term heir.
The real shock is both the speed at which he has completed that trajectory, and the massive turnaround from a deeply troubled maiden campaign in 2025, when he struggled for consistency, which then affected his confidence as his year spiralled out of control.
The first glimpses that the 2026 version of Antonelli was a different beast than last season’s more frail iteration came at the very first race. In Melbourne, Antonelli brushed off a 25G crash in final practice to claim second on the grid, finishing there in the race behind Russell.
Overcoming that crash showed Antonelli was a much more mature and even-keeled person than the one who neared a breaking point over the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix, and received tough love from team principal Toto Wolff for an underwhelming spell that continued after the summer break.
"If something like that would have happened to me last year, like in Melbourne, probably the rest of the weekend would have been very compromised," Antonelli acknowledged. "When you get one full year of experience in F1, then you come back the next year and you just feel better. Things happen a bit easier, because you're not forcing them to happen as much.
"This year, I took a step back and just tried to focus on the important things and to enjoy it as much as possible as well. Not only the driving, but also the process. Mentally I've been in a much happier place this year compared to last season. [You learn] how to move on together as a team from difficult situations."
"He's had a perfect season" - Charles Leclerc

That night and day difference between freshman and sophomore Antonelli has also taken aback his rivals. When asked by Autosport what has surprised him the most about Antonelli's 2026 campaign, Charles Leclerc singled it out.
"What has surprised me is the first year to the second year," said the Ferrari star. "Already from the very first laps with this car, we could see that he was very strong, and in the first qualifying of the year, first race of the year, he was very strong.
"I think you could tell that these kinds of cars were just fitting him much better, and the hard work that he had done between the seasons paid off. It was very clear after two, three races that he would be a big contender.
"It's been near perfect. There was one mistake two or three races ago, but that's probably the only one. He's had a perfect season."
That newfound unshakeability makes it easy to forget about Antonelli's tender age as he's set to break Sebastian Vettel's record by three years. And there was something inadvertently amusing about Antonelli saying it would be "something I've dreamt of since I was little", which in his case isn't a particularly long period of time.
But as Antonelli pinches himself to be in such a luxurious position, there's no reason to deviate from the mindset that got him this far. Just for a few more races.
"To find myself in such a position is incredible," he said. "But at the same time, I need to keep going, keep pushing. It's not over yet."
