A Tripura Police team has landed in Delhi to bring back YouTuber and social media influencer Amir Shokeen, who was arrested by Delhi Police on Thursday for hurling racial slurs at a man from Tripura. The team is expected to go to the Sadar Bazaar Police Station to take over the accused and will seek his transit remand from a court so that he can be taken to Tripura.
The video at the centre of the case was reportedly made about a month ago. Delhi Police registered the case on their own after the clip surfaced on social media, with the force itself turning complainant in view of the gravity of the matter.
Explaining how the case unfolded, DCP North District Niharika Bhatt said, "In this case, we came to know through social media that a person named Amir Shokeen, a social media influencer and YouTuber, had used racial slurs against a man from Tripura. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the police became the complainant and registered a case at Sadar Bazaar Police Station, under the jurisdiction of North District. The case was registered under Sections 192, 196, 352 and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)."
The accused was traced after a day-long effort by several North District teams, which carried out raids across the capital and relied on technical surveillance. "Throughout the day, multiple teams from North District conducted raids across Delhi and carried out technical surveillance. Based on these efforts, the accused, Mohammad Amir, was apprehended in the evening and arrested in connection with the case," she said.
The four BNS sections invoked deal with provocation intended to cause a riot, promotion of enmity between different groups, intentional insult meant to provoke a breach of the peace, and statements conducing to public mischief.
Delhi Police will work with their Tripura counterparts on the next steps, Bhatt said. "We will coordinate with them (Tripura Police). We will put Amir Shokeen under sustained interrogation. Based on the interrogation and the information he provides, we will proceed further with the investigation," she added.
