ⓘ YouTube Music
YouTube Music is rolling out labels to identify AI-generated songs on its dedicated music streaming platform. Listeners can now check whether their favorite singer is human or just a bunch of clever algorithms. The feature is also expected to reach regular YouTube, where music shares the stage with videos of just about everything else.
YouTube Music has started rolling out labels marking tracks created primarily using generative AI, making it easier for listeners to discover whether their favorite new artist is human, artificial, or somewhere in between. Announced on October 14, the feature adds a small AI label directly below the song title on the Now Playing screen. Tapping it opens a panel explaining that the audio was altered or generated using artificial intelligence.
The system targets music where generative AI plays a significant role, including tracks with AI-created compositions and vocals. In other words, using software to correct a few questionable notes doesn't automatically turn a singer into a robot.
YouTube says it is working with music-industry partners and using its own detection tools to identify such tracks. However, the company hasn't revealed how accurately the system can identify undisclosed AI-generated music, leaving some questions about its reliability. The move comes as streaming platforms face an invasion of AI-generated songs. Services including Spotify and Deezer have also introduced measures to identify or manage synthetic music.
The labels are rolling out first on YouTube Music, with plans to bring them to the main YouTube app later.
For listeners, it's a small but useful addition. Whether they'll actually pay attention to the label before adding another suspiciously perfect singer to their playlists is another question.
