By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man who has spent three months behind bars because he could not post bail received some good news in court on Wednesday, October 14, when prosecutors withdrew one of two criminal charges against him.
Wilfred Dixon, 39, was initially charged with going equipped to commit burglary or theft and handling stolen goods after police allegedly found him with a tool kit containing a grinder in Hattieville on July 13, 2026.
During his latest appearance at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, a police prosecutor informed the court that the prosecution was withdrawing the charge of going equipped and would proceed to trial solely on the handling stolen goods charge.
Dixon, who remains unrepresented, was provided with eight pages of disclosure and three photographs. He disputed part of a witness statement alleging that he was seen throwing an object.
According to previous BBN reporting, police allegedly spotted Dixon carrying the tool kit in a yard near Locario Street in Hattieville around 4:50 a.m. When approached, he reportedly fled and later discarded the kit near Mile 16 on the George Price Highway.
At his initial arraignment, Dixon denied wrongdoing, telling the court, “I nuh guilty because I nuh thief it. I found it dah Sibun.”
Although he was granted bail of $800 plus one surety, Dixon has remained at the Belize Central Prison because he has been unable to secure someone to sign his bail.
His trial for handling stolen goods is scheduled for November 13, 2026.
