Chang In-hwa, chairman of the Korea Iron & Steel Association and chairman of POSCO Group, has secured Seoul as the host city for the World Steel Association's 2027 annual general meeting.
The World Steel Association officially announced South Korea's capital as the 2027 venue at a member company meeting held in New Delhi on the 13th. The association's annual meeting, held each October, brings together chief executives of global steelmakers to discuss industry issues and seek cooperation on sustainable development. It will be the first time the gathering has taken place in Seoul since 2005, a gap of 22 years.
Chang appeared in person in a promotional video for the Seoul meeting, encouraging member companies to attend.
Chang continued his push for global cooperation and solidarity throughout the three-day meeting, which began on the 11th. At an executive committee session that day, participants held in-depth discussions on key issues including the development of low-carbon product guidelines and international standardization of carbon emission allocation methods. On climate change, Chang cited the damage caused by Typhoon Hinnamnor in 2022 and stressed the need to build a public-private cooperation framework prepared for extreme disaster situations.
Chang also met with executives of major steelmakers, including JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal. POSCO is currently pursuing a joint venture with JSW Steel to build an integrated steel mill in India, a high-growth market. The project is part of a full-scale localization investment based on POSCO Group's "Triple Core" strategy.
Separately, POSCO received the top award in the process safety category at a safety and health best practices competition held during the meeting. The winning technology, an in-house developed system that uses vision artificial intelligence to prevent safety accidents, analyzes on-site video data with AI to automatically detect hazardous situations and immediately alert workers. It was recognized as a model case of AI-based safety technology.
