Boat operators and fishermen in Jinja, Mayuge and Buvuma districts have rejected proposed government registration and licensing fees of Shs450,000 for passenger boats, warning that the charges could strain their businesses and make compliance with safety requirements more difficult.
The operators say the proposed fees would add to existing taxes and charges imposed by local governments, leaving small-scale businesses struggling to afford essential safety equipment, including life jackets.
