The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State has dismissed a media report alleging that the register of voters was not displayed at some registration centres in Alimosho and Shomolu Local Government Areas of the state.
The commission described the report as false, insisting that the display of the register was conducted across all 245 Registration Areas, also known as wards, in Lagos State, including those in the two local government areas.
INEC made its position known in a statement issued by its Head of Voter Education and Publicity, Esther Emeh, in response to a report by Arise TV.
Emeh urged members of the public to disregard the allegation, maintaining that the exercise was carried out across the state’s registration areas.
“The news alleging that the display of the Register of Voters did not take place at some Registration Area centres in Alimosho and Shomolu Local Government Areas is false,” she said.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the display of the Register of Voters was conducted across all 245 Registration Areas (Wards) in Lagos State, including all Registration Areas in Alimosho and Shomolu Local Government Areas.”
INEC insists exercise covered all wards
The commission’s clarification was aimed at correcting what it described as inaccurate information about the display of the voters’ register in parts of Lagos.
According to INEC, the exercise covered all 245 registration areas in the state, with no exception for Alimosho or Shomolu.
The display of the register is an important part of the electoral process, allowing voters to check their registration details and helping to identify possible errors or omissions that may require attention.
INEC urged residents to rely on its official communication channels for accurate information about electoral activities and related procedures.
The commission also stressed the importance of ensuring that reports about electoral exercises are based on verified information, particularly where public confidence in the electoral process is concerned.
Commission urges media to verify reports
INEC called on media organisations and practitioners to confirm information with credible and authoritative sources before publishing reports on its activities.
The commission warned that inaccurate reporting could contribute to the spread of misinformation and undermine public confidence in electoral processes.
“Responsible journalism and accurate reporting are essential to preventing the spread of misinformation and maintaining public confidence in the electoral process,” the statement added.
The commission reiterated its commitment to transparency, credible electoral processes and the timely dissemination of accurate information to residents.
It maintained that providing reliable information remained important to ensuring that the public was properly informed about electoral activities across Lagos State.
INEC’s response followed the report alleging that the voters’ register had not been displayed at some registration centres in Alimosho and Shomolu, an allegation the commission firmly denied.
