Speakers at a programme in Chattogram yesterday demanded enactment of a “Right to Food Act” to ensure food security for all citizens.
The demand came at a public hearing on rising food prices and inflation affecting low-income urban populations, held at Chittagong Press Club.
Mohammad Abu Sufian, MP for Chattogram-9, pledged to raise the demand in parliament, according to a press release from the Consumers Association of Bangladesh.
“There is an urgent need to address the food crisis facing low-income people, enhance their purchasing power, and ensure the availability of safe and nutritious food,” he said.
The event was organised by Food Security Network Bangladesh, ISDE Bangladesh and Participatory Research and Action Network.
SM Nazer Hossain, executive director of ISDE Bangladesh, presided over the event.
