The House of Representatives has called on Nigerians not to panic over the confirmation of Ebola virus disease in the country and to adhere strictly to guidelines issued by health authorities.
The Chairman, House Committee on Infectious Diseases, Amobi Ogah, made the call while briefing the House Press Corps on the development.
Ogah, who noted that he has been in constant communication with the relevant authorities since the confirmation of the Ebola case, implored the Federal Government to immediately mobilise relevant public and private health institutions to intensify preparedness and response efforts.
He also called for the urgent release of outstanding appropriated funds to relevant health agencies to enable them to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
The lawmaker, while urging the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the NCDC to assess Nigeria’s preparedness and response capacity in line with current epidemiological evidence and public health guidance, pledged to engage relevant ministries, departments, agencies and public health institutions to obtain updates on the issue.
According to him, timely action by health authorities, coupled with public cooperation and adherence to official guidelines, would be essential to protecting lives and safeguarding public health.
