IMPHAL, Oct 20 : In the backdrop of the massacre of three civilians at Khongbal Sunurok Uyok hills on October 19, 2026 and the deteriorating law and order situation, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand today held a meeting with representatives of political parties belonging to the INDIA Bloc.
In a social media post, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand wrote, “Held a cordial meeting with representatives of the INDIA Bloc, led by former Chief Minister Shri Okram Ibobi Singh, accompanied by CLP leader and Hon’ble MLA Shri K Meghachandra Singh, Hon’ble Member of Parliament Shri Angomcha Bimol Akoijam; Hon’ble MLA Shri Okram Surjakumar and leaders of various political parties belonging to the INDIA Bloc, at my Secretariat, Babupara today.”
The meeting reviewed the overall security situation of the State following the tragic killing of three innocent civilians by armed miscreants at Nongshum, Imphal East yesterday.
The representatives of the INDIA Bloc expressed deep concern over the incident and urged me to convene an all-political-party meeting in view of the prevailing situation.
“I gave them a patient hearing and assured them that the matter would be looked into. We also had a constructive discussion on maintaining peace and collective efforts for the restoration of normalcy in the State”, Khemchand wrote.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting at Congress Bhavan, BT Road, Okram Ibobi remarked that the law and order situation has totally collapsed.
He said that innocent people belonging to Nagas, Meiteis and Kukis are being killed on a daily basis.
Maintaining law and order, protecting people’s life and property are the most fundamental responsibilities entrusted to the State Government by the Constitution, the former Chief Minister said.
Ibobi further said that the State, at present, has been facing several other critical issues like economic downturn, inflation, unemployment etc.
Of all the issues, the most critical one is the protection of life and property but the Government has failed on this presently, Ibobi said.
The Supreme Court has already given its observation that the State Government has totally failed in upholding law and order and all Constitutional machinery has collapsed in Manipur, Ibobi pointed out.
“As we cannot just watch silently when innocent people are being killed on a daily basis, we went to the Chief Minister to enquire how the State Government has been handling law and order”, the former Chief Minister said.
If the Centre is committed, containing armed groups operating in Manipur is only a matter of days, he said.
It looks like both the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister are enjoying the prolonged and widespread violence raging in Manipur, the former Chief Minister alleged.
According to Okram Ibobi, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand reportedly told the INDIA Bloc representatives that the issue is a very delicate and sensitive one and as such not much force can be used.
Khemchand also told the political representatives that the State Government, nonetheless, has been working hard to bring the situation under control.
