By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño says China’s sanctions against Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca will not change Belize’s relationship with Taiwan.
In an exclusive interview with Taiwan’s Central News Agency in Bangkok on Wednesday, Briceño reaffirmed Belize’s commitment to Taiwan as a longstanding partner.
He described China’s sanctions as unreasonable, unnecessary, wrong and illegal, and said Belize, as an independent country, has the right to decide which countries it maintains relations with.
According to CNA, Briceño said the move will only strengthen Belize’s resolve to support Taiwan.
“We strongly believe in the right to self determination,” he said.
The Prime Minister also argued that Taiwan’s strengths in the economy, technology, artificial intelligence, health care, education and climate research deserve recognition from the United Nations and other international bodies.
China sanctioned Fonseca earlier this week over Belize’s ties with Taiwan, freezing any assets he holds in China and barring him from Hong Kong and Macau. The Government of Belize rejected the measures and said it stands fully behind the minister.
