On Thursday, around 180 people packed the parish hall in Puerto Pollensa for the launch of a new neighbourhood association - Per U Moll, per la seva millora (For the Port, for its improvement).
It has been established in order to defend the interests of the community and to demand solutions to the shortcomings affecting residents. The turnout exceeded the organisers' expectations, so much so that the venue could not accommodate everyone who arrived.
The association aims to serve as an independent, proactive voice when engaging with the town hall and other public authorities, channelling residents' concerns into concrete proposals. Its primary objectives include improving public services and spaces, safeguarding the residents' quality of life, and conserving the natural environment and the Bay of Pollensa.
Attendees shared their concerns and highlighted needs they consider a priority for the future of the area. The association emphasised the importance of recruiting new members to increase its representative weight and its ability to engage in dialogue with public institutions. It is therefore calling on local residents to get involved with this new collective project.
The creation of this association is the latest development in what has been, over many years, an at-times fractious relationship with the town hall. A Puerto Pollensa political party, Unió Mollera Pollencina, was formed in the mid-90s. An independent grouping, its stated aim has always been to defend the interests of Puerto Pollensa.
In 2010, a major demonstration was held. Local residents and local businesspeople participated in demanding improvements in the face of what was viewed as neglect of Puerto Pollensa by the town hall. Protesters gathered outside the municipal offices and shouted down the then mayor, Joan Cerdà, and Puerto Pollensa delegate, Francisca Ramon, when they attempted to address the crowd.
