More Chinese flights from Budapest are facing cancellations and temporary suspensions, raising questions about the profitability of long-haul connections between Hungary and China. Following changes to Hainan Airlines’ Shenzhen service, China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines are reportedly cutting flights to Ningbo and suspending their Xi’an route for several months.
Chinese flights from Budapest face further cancellations
According to information published by Hungarian aviation news outlet Budflyer and subsequently reported by Világgazdaság, several previously scheduled flights between Ningbo, a major commercial and industrial city in eastern China, and Budapest will not operate in November and December 2026.
The affected dates are:
- November 2026: 5, 9, 12 and 16
- December 2026: 3 and 14
The route is operated by Shanghai Airlines, part of the China Eastern Airlines group.
However, some third-party flight databases continue to display departures on certain affected dates. The cancellations should therefore be treated as reported schedule changes rather than independently confirmed cancellations of every listed service.
Xi’an–Budapest route reportedly suspended until February 2027
A more substantial interruption is expected on the Xi’an–Budapest route.
According to the same reports, the once-weekly direct service will be suspended from 7 November 2026 until 26 February 2027, leaving the two cities without their regular nonstop passenger connection for several months.
Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province and the historical starting point of the Silk Road, is an important cultural, educational and economic centre in north-western China.
The reported suspension could affect tourists, business travellers and passengers visiting friends and relatives. However, the precise duration of the interruption has not yet been independently confirmed through an official airline statement.
Hainan Airlines also reduces its Budapest operations
The latest developments follow significant adjustments by Hainan Airlines.
As AIRportal.hu reported on 16 October, Hainan’s Shenzhen–Budapest flights have been removed from booking systems between 16 and 30 November.
Services could resume on 4 December, although the airline’s schedules for the remaining winter months remain uncertain.
Hainan Airlines is also reducing or suspending services on several other European routes, including connections to Vienna, Brussels and Madrid.
These changes indicate that the adjustments extend beyond Budapest and form part of a broader revision of the carrier’s international operations.

Why are Chinese flights from Budapest being reduced?
Neither China Eastern Airlines nor Shanghai Airlines has publicly provided a detailed explanation for the reported cancellations. Hainan Airlines has also not officially confirmed the specific commercial reasons behind its latest schedule changes.
Nevertheless, several economic and operational factors could explain why airlines might reduce their long-haul capacity.
– High aviation fuel costs: Long-haul flights consume substantial quantities of fuel, making their profitability particularly sensitive to changes in global energy prices. Higher operating costs can make routes with limited margins less attractive.
– Insufficient passenger demand: If flights fail to attract enough paying passengers, or if average ticket revenues are too low, operating the service may become financially unsustainable. However, there is currently no publicly verified evidence that low booking numbers are responsible for these particular cancellations.
– Withdrawal of financial or marketing support: Some international air routes benefit from promotional agreements or financial incentives during their development. According to AIRportal.hu, earlier Chinese media reports linked previous Hainan Airlines route reductions to the withdrawal of support. Whether this directly contributed to the latest Budapest changes remains unconfirmed.
– Seasonal fluctuations in travel demand: Airlines frequently adjust capacity during the winter season, particularly on routes where leisure travel represents a significant share of passengers.
– Aircraft and network optimisation: Carriers may redeploy aircraft to routes offering stronger demand, higher yields or better connections through their main hubs.
Importantly, these are possible commercial explanations, not confirmed reasons for the individual route suspensions. No verified passenger load figures or route-level financial results have been published to establish whether the Budapest services were operating at a loss.
What does this mean for Budapest Airport and passengers?
Hungary has developed extensive direct air connections with China in recent years, supported by growing economic cooperation, Chinese investment and tourism.
Direct flights are particularly valuable for business travellers because they eliminate the need to transfer through other European, Middle Eastern or Asian hubs.
The reported reductions do not mean that direct air travel between Hungary and China is coming to an end. Nevertheless, they highlight how individual routes remain exposed to changing market conditions and airline commercial decisions.
Passengers booked on affected Chinese flights from Budapest should check their reservation status directly with the operating airline or travel agency. Where a flight has been cancelled, travellers should request information about alternative connections, refunds and any applicable passenger rights.
For now, the key question is whether the changes represent a temporary winter adjustment or the beginning of a longer-term reduction in capacity. The airlines’ subsequent schedule updates will provide a clearer picture.
