Dominic Jok Deng Majak, South Sudan’s deputy head of mission to Rwanda, died in Cairo, Egypt, on Tuesday night after battling a heart condition for nearly two years, a family member said.
Mustafa Biong, a relative, told Radio Tamazuj that Majak had suffered from the heart condition for almost two years.
“Dominic had a heart problem over the past two years. He was posted to Japan, but because of his heart condition, he preferred to work in the region to be close to home. That is why he was posted to Rwanda,” Biong said.
Biong said Majak had spent some time in Nairobi before collapsing there about two months ago because of his heart condition. He was later taken to Cairo because the doctor who had performed his heart surgery was based there.
“He was admitted to hospital in Cairo and, after diagnosis, the doctor said everything was fine and he could travel and come back after three months. But after some days, he underwent more tests. After the tests, he collapsed and was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) on Sept. 25. Last night, he died,” Biong said.
Majak graduated with a law degree from the University of Cairo and worked as an administrative officer before joining Sudan’s foreign service following the signing of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
He also served as office manager in the office of Deng Alor Kuol, who was then Sudan’s foreign affairs minister.
After South Sudan gained independence in 2011, Majak served as a diplomat in several countries, including Syria and South Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not issued a statement on his death by the time of publication.
