More bin hubs expected to be installed in Glasgow following sucessful pilot

More bin hubs, designed to improve recycling rates across Glasgow, are expected to be installed from next April, a new report has suggested.

Glasgow City Council is enhancing its recycling services to make waste management easier for everyone, mitigate safety issues faced by collection crews, reduce missed bin collections and help residents keep their back courts tidy.

So far, 700 hubs have been installed at pilot areas with the new, purpose-built bin-hubs servicing on average 40 flats and located at the front of properties.

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request recently revealed that more than £2.5m has been spent on the supply and delivery of Glasgow’s bin hubs since the programme launched.

It confirmed that 628 hubs had been installed across the city to date, including the pilot areas and that as of July 2026 around 21,000 properties now benefit from the increased collection as a result of the hubs and new bins allocated in back courts.

During a recent scrutiny committee meeting councillor Stephen Curran asked if he could have some more information on the roll-out of the bin hubs and if there were pressures on particular areas of the city.

A response has been provided and is expected to be discussed at an upcoming meeting.

It reads: “The bin hub project has implemented almost 700 bin hubs across four pilot areas and the whole of the south-west area of the city.

“There has been a pause in the programme whilst an evaluation of the first full phase of the roll out takes place. It is expected the next phase will commence in April 2027.

“The next phases will focus on areas where there are existing challenges relating to health and safety and accessibility within predominantly tenemental properties in various locations across the city.

“These issues will be assessed and prioritised in advance of the next phase of the bin hub roll out.”
