The Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Babatunde Adejumo, Monday, tasked judges of the superior courts of records not to allow stress of judicial office and responsibility weigh them down in the line of duty, charging them to treat their health, wellness and nutrition as an absolute priority.
Adejumo stated this at the opening ceremony of retreat on health wellness and nutrition organised for judges of the superior courts of records held in Abuja.
The administrator, who reminded participants that judicial wellness is not a personal luxury, expressed concerns that when mental resilience of a judicial officer is compromised, their judicial outcomes suffer, saying it directly undermine public trust and confidence in the judiciary.
He said, “Beyond these administrative and intellectual demands, Your Lordships are constantly challenged to balance strict judicial neutrality with a keen awareness of social context and professional lives.
“Your Lordship must dedicate significant time to transcribing proceedings and crafting meticulously reasoned judgments throughout the year, alongside rigorous courtroom duties.
“Your Lordship also undergo continuous capacity building across diverse legal issues, So the retreat on health, wellness and nutrition is specifically designed for you to take full advantage of the wealth of information to be shared.”
The administrator therefore charged participants to approach the discussions with openness and engage with resource persons interactively.
While thanking the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and the Justice John Inyang Okoro’s committee over the initiative, Adejumo assured that the gesture would be extended to judges of the lower courts too.
So far in 2026, the NJI has organised over 40 training programmes covering critical areas.
