Thirty fashion enthusiasts have made the cut in this year’s Local Fashion Police competition, following a selection process that saw leading South African designers sift through hundreds of entries.
The annual initiative by Proudly South African celebrates local fashion, design and creativity, giving participants an opportunity to showcase their personal style while highlighting the talent within the country’s fashion industry.
The 30 finalists will compete for bespoke designer outfits valued at R50,000, created by some of South Africa’s established couturiers. They will also get the opportunity to walk the runway at the competition’s grand finale.
This year’s judging panel included Mpumelelo “Lele” Dhlamini of Ezokhetho, Thabo Makhetha-Kwinana of Thabo Makhetha, Anel Botha and Rivaldo Louw of By Waldo.
Each designer will select finalists and create an exclusive outfit for their chosen recipient, bringing their individual design approach to the showcase.
Proudly South African chief executive officer Eustace Mashimbye said the quality and volume of entries made the selection process challenging.
“The overwhelming response and exceptional standard of entries received are a testament to the depth of talent, creativity and innovation within South Africa’s fashion industry,” Mashimbye said.
He added that the grand finale would give the finalists an opportunity to take centre stage while highlighting the craftsmanship and creative identity of local designers.
