Work advances on La General Hospital project

Three months after 3News’ last visit to the La General Hospital construction site in July, there are visible signs of progress, renewing hope among residents who have waited years for the facility to be completed.

When the news team visited on Wednesday, October 21, engineers and construction workers were seen actively working across various sections of the project.

For communities such as La, Teshie and Nungua, the absence of the La General Hospital since its demolition has heightened expectations for a modern facility that can respond to their healthcare needs and ease pressure on other hospitals in the Greater Accra Region.

On the ground floor, work was ongoing on the emergency unit, consulting rooms, nursing stations and other masonry activities, suggesting that several components of the hospital are progressing simultaneously.

The renewed activity comes six years after the demolition of the old La General Hospital in 2020, a development that left residents without their major public hospital for years.

A project officer from the Ministry of Health, Kwadwo Adu Gyamfi, explained the current stage of construction and the work being undertaken to move the project towards completion.

“We are doing the partition and block work for the first floor. We have zoned them into three and we hope to finish within schedule for the people,” he said.

For residents, the visible progress is encouraging. But they say the pace of construction must be sustained, with government providing the necessary funds to prevent further delays.

Andrew was elated: “We can see the progress of work. We are happy and we hope they will finish in time for us.”

Mawusi, a hairdresser opposite the site, was equally happy with progress but wants government to commit more funds to the project.

“We are happy it is moving but we heard there are issues with funds. They should bring more money for us,” she said.

When completed and fully operational by November 2027 as scheduled, the new La General Hospital is expected to expand access to healthcare, improve emergency response and provide additional capacity for patient care.

However, the visible progress at the site must translate into a completed and functional hospital, with adequate equipment, medical personnel and other essential resources.

The project is a Government of Ghana (GoG) funded project.
