The Wisconsin Badgers dealt a huge blow to Lincoln Riley and USC with a 24-7 upset win on Saturday. The Badgers shut out the Trojans in the second half, as a couple of touchdowns allowed them to pull away. With the win, Wisconsin improved to 5-2 on the season, while USC dropped to 6-2.
While Wisconsin’s playing style isn’t exactly the most entertaining to watch, Badgers head coach Luke Fickell was proud that his team stayed true to his mantra of consistency and playing all four quarters.
“That’s what we did. Gritty ain’t pretty but that’s who we are,” Fickell said during his post-game interview with NBC.

It’s a testament to the Badgers’ grit that they were able to blow out the No. 16 Trojans with just 200 total yards of offense. Wisconsin quarterback Colton Joseph was far from flashy as he finished with only 58 passing yards. But he completed 12 of his 14 pass attempts and crucially, did not throw any interceptions. Meanwhile, the defense did its job, limiting the Trojans to -17 yards rushing and picking off USC quarterback Jayden Maiava twice in the first quarter alone.
Even though Maiava had USC great Caleb Williams offering him some words of advice at halftime, he was unable to get the Trojans offense going in the second half. It also didn’t help that USC kicker Caden Chittenden missed both of his field goal attempts.
The upset loss to Wisconsin is a bad start to a crucial set of games for USC’s College Football Playoff hopes, with No. 3 Ohio state and No. 6 Indiana coming up next. Meanwhile, Wisconsin will head to the Battle of the Heartland rivalry game against Iowa hoping to end their four-game losing skid against the Hawkeyes.
