PHILIPPINE SHARES continued to climb on Monday as bargain hunting continued, but investors stayed cautious due to a lack of fresh leads and lingering geopolitical and macroeconomic risks.
The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) went up by 0.74% or 42.19 points to close at 5,743.18, while the broader all shares index rose by 0.35% or 11.26 points to 3,203.11.
The PSEi opened Monday’s trading session at 5,727.65, higher than Friday’s close of 5,700.99. This was already its lowest showing. Meanwhile, it touched an intraday high of 5,769.29.
“The PSEi ended higher as bargain hunting continued from last week’s rebound. However, market sentiment still looks fragile, with the index hovering around the 5,700 level amid a lack of sustained positive catalysts, as selective buying still prevails across the broader market,” Regina Capital Development Corp. Head of Sales Luis A. Limlingan said in a Viber message. “Continued geopolitical uncertainty and lingering macroeconomic risks may weigh on investor confidence and limit the index’s recovery in the near term.”
“The local market extended its gains today as investors continued with their bargain hunting. This is amid the headwinds that are still at play including elevated global oil prices and bond yields, as well as concerns for the local economy’s growth and inflation outlook,” Philstocks Financial, Inc. Research Manager Japhet Louis O. Tantiangco said in a Viber message.
