Today’s Focus
Latin America opens Monday with a split personality: cheaper oil than its early-session peak, but a dollar that refuses to weaken. For a region that imports fuel and borrows in dollars, that is a mixed blessing.
The early Brent spike above $105 has faded to around $103, which helps Brazilian and Colombian producers without stoking immediate petrol-price anger. Petróleo Brasileiro, or Petrobras, was the most-traded name on B3 in the last session, with turnover of roughly R$2.8 billion (about US$560 million).
Yet the dollar index holding near 102.2 means every Latin currency is earning its keep. The Mexican peso weakened in the last session, while the Brazilian real strengthened — a reminder that local stories, not just global dollar strength, are setting exchange rates.
Trading will be thin because of holidays in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia and parts of the US. The one live data point — Mexico’s industrial production report at 6 am Mexico City time (9 am in Brasília) — could shift the peso and the Mexican stock exchange, known as the Mexbol.
What matters today. Whether Mexico’s industrial data and the week’s US inflation figures push the dollar higher and squeeze Latin currencies again.

01 The overnight tape in one read
The overnight session was defensive but not fearful. South Korea’s Kospi fell, Japan was closed for a holiday, and Australia’s benchmark rose.
European futures firmed, with the Euro Stoxx 50, Germany’s DAX and London’s FTSE all pointing higher. Wall Street futures extended that tone, with S&P 500 and Nasdaq contracts pointing modestly higher.
The big story was oil. Brent crude had briefly jumped above $105.50 on Houthi-linked attacks, then retreated to the $103 range. West Texas Intermediate, the US benchmark, slipped to around $90.50 to $91.00.
That retreat matters more for Latin America than for Wall Street. A sustained oil price above $100 would feed directly into fuel inflation from Mexico City to Buenos Aires, forcing central banks to keep interest rates higher for longer.
Assessment — Cautious, with a small risk-on lean MEDIUM
The evidence leans mildly positive: US futures are up, oil’s spike has reversed and Brazil’s main index closed near a record. Still, the dollar’s persistence and thin holiday liquidity mean moves can be exaggerated. The variable to watch is whether the US 10-year yield, already above 5.2%, keeps climbing — that is the brake on any sustained Latin rally.
02 The board before the open
| Instrument | Level | Change | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ibovespa | 209,067 | +1.38% | Brazil’s main stock index closed near its 52-week high, buoyed by Petrobras and small-caps |
| IPC (Mexbol) | 66,049 | +1.63% | Mexico’s main index gained more than 1.6%, leading the region’s big boards |
| IPSA | 11,043 | +0.17% | Chile’s benchmark barely moved, a quiet session for Santiago |
| Merval | 2,828,027 | −0.16% | Argentina’s index slipped slightly ahead of Tuesday’s inflation data |
| COLCAP | 2,531 | — | Colombia’s main board was little changed |
The board is live in the piece above, so the picture is visible. What stands out is the dispersion: Mexico gained 1.6% even as its peso weakened, while Argentina slipped.
Mexico’s 1.63% move is notable because the peso fell 1.17% against the dollar on the same day. The two moves pulled in opposite directions.

03 What the data shows — Brazil’s small-caps exploded on heavy volume
| Stock | Move | Turnover | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| AZEV3 (Azevedo & Travassos) | +42.8% | R$26m | a small construction name that rocketed on thin volume |
| MRVE3 (MRV Engenharia) | +21.6% | R$267m | one of Brazil’s biggest homebuilders surged |
| MGLU3 (Magazine Luiza) | +19.2% | R$947m | the retailer jumped on heavy turnover, signalling retail appetite |
| VIVT3 (Telefônica Brasil) | −5.2% | R$312m | the telecom fell sharply, a defensive name losing favour |
| TIMS3 (TIM Brasil) | −4.2% | R$282m | another telecom slid, possibly on sector rotation |
The B3 tape in the last session was a risk-on scream. Small and mid-cap names like MRV Engenharia, a major homebuilder, and Magazine Luiza, a large retailer, posted double-digit gains on massive turnover.
Crucially, this happened while the Ibovespa itself rose 1.38% — the board shows Brazil moving in step with Wall Street, but the action was concentrated in domestic cyclical names. That pattern fits a bet on lower Brazilian interest rates, not just global risk appetite.
The losers were defensive telecoms: Telefônica Brasil and TIM Brasil both fell more than 4% on heavy volume. Money appeared to rotate out of safe dividend payers and into higher-beta domestic stories.
04 Brazil and the currencies
The board shows the real strengthened 0.73% against the dollar, closing near 4.99 reais per US dollar. That is a meaningful move and it puts the currency at its strongest in recent sessions.
The real’s rally matters because foreign investors watch it as a gauge of political risk. A stronger real, combined with the Ibovespa closing at 209,067 — essentially at its 52-week high — points to renewed investor appetite for Brazilian assets.
The Selic, Brazil’s benchmark interest rate, remains the magnet. It stands at 13.75% after five straight quarter-point cuts, and Polymarket traders put the odds of a sixth cut in November at 86%. Friday’s IPCA inflation data complicates that bet: IBGE, Brazil’s statistics agency, reported 0.82% for September (0.88% seasonally adjusted), which took the 12-month rate to 4.58%, against a 4.5% forecast and 4.22% before. With the US 10-year Treasury yield above 5.2%, the interest-rate gap to the US is thinner than it once was.
The peso tells the opposite story. The board shows the dollar rising 1.17% against the Mexican currency, even as the Mexbol gained 1.63%. That divergence is worth watching — if foreign investors were driving the equity rally, the currency would typically strengthen with it.
05 The regional setup
| Index | Country | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Mexbol (IPC) | Mexico | +1.63% |
| Ibovespa | Brazil | +1.38% |
| COLCAP | Colombia | — |
| IPSA | Chile | +0.17% |
| Merval | Argentina | −0.16% |
The regional tape shows three distinct stories. Mexico led with a 1.63% gain, Brazil followed with 1.38%, and Colombia and Chile were essentially flat.
Argentina was the only decliner, slipping 0.16% ahead of Tuesday’s inflation figure, which INDEC, Argentina’s statistics agency, publishes on 13 October.
The divergence matters because it tells you where risk appetite is flowing. Mexico’s gain was the strongest move on the board, while Argentina was the only market to close lower.
06 The technical picture
Technically, Brazil is the strongest chart in the region. The Ibovespa closed at 209,067, exactly at its 52-week high, after two straight up sessions. A break above that level with volume could trigger momentum buying.
Mexico’s IPC is still 7.8% below its 52-week high, meaning there is catch-up potential if the peso stabilises. Chile’s IPSA and Colombia’s COLCAP look range-bound after small moves.
The S&P 500 is a whisker from its 52-week high, down just 0.1%. That matters for Latin America, because when US equities make new highs, global fund managers tend to add emerging-market exposure.
The risk in every chart is the dollar index holding above 102. If it breaks higher, the technical pressure on Latin currencies — and the imported-inflation story — would quickly overshadow the equity momentum.
07 What to watch
- Mexico industrial production: the 9 am Brasília release (consensus +1.5% year on year, against +2.7% before) is the day’s only live Latin data point; a weak print could push the peso lower and drag the Mexbol’s Friday gains
- US 10-year yield above 5.2%: if it keeps rising, the interest-rate differential argument for Brazilian and Mexican assets weakens
- Oil’s next move: a renewed push above $105 would revive fuel-inflation fears for importers and boost Petrobras and Ecopetrol
- Argentina inflation: Tuesday’s September print from INDEC will set the tone for the Merval and the peso this week
What Prediction Markets Say
Polymarket traders put the odds that Banxico, Mexico’s central bank, holds its policy rate at its November decision at 71.5%, with 20.2% on a 25-basis-point cut and 6.0% on a 25-basis-point increase (US$52,513 traded). Prices as of 11:02 pm ET on 11 October 2026. These are real-money bets, not polls; Kalshi, the other platform we track, is regulated in the US by the CFTC.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Latin American stocks rise on Friday?
The board shows a broad risk-on move, with Wall Street up, oil easing from its spike and specific local stories — like heavy turnover in Brazil’s small-caps — driving gains.
What is the Ibovespa?
It is Brazil’s main stock index, a basket of the largest and most-traded companies on the B3 exchange in São Paulo.
Why does the dollar index matter for Latin America?
Most Latin countries import fuel priced in dollars and have external debt in dollars, so a stronger US currency raises costs and makes interest-rate cuts harder.
What should I watch today besides the market open?
Mexico’s industrial production at 9 am Brasília time, and then Argentina’s inflation figure on Tuesday. Both will move their currencies and equity boards.
