A case has been filed against 21 named individuals and 10 unidentified others over the killing of Jubo Dal leader Zahirul Islam in Narayanganj's Sonargaon, with a local Chhatra Dal leader named as the prime accused.
The case was filed by the victim's nephew, Ismail Hossain, at Sonargaon Police Station yesterday evening (24 October), said Sonargaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Abdul Barik.
The prime accused, Rizvi, is the organising secretary of the Kalapaharia Union unit of Chhatra Dal in Araihazar. He is also known as a close follower of Mubarak Hossain, a former member secretary of the upazila Chhatra Dal.
Zahirul, 45, was president of the Kalapaharia Union unit of Jubo Dal and the son of Abdur Rahman of Khaliachar village. He lived in a rented house in Munshiganj Sadar and ran a pharmacy at Char Kishoreganj Bazar in Sonargaon.
According to the case statement, Zahirul had been pressured to withdraw from the race for chairman in the upcoming Kalapaharia Union Parishad election. The complainant alleged that he had also received threats and demands for a large sum of money.
The statement said Rizvi and his associates attacked Zahirul at a CNG stand near the old Araihazar police station on 15 November 2025. Zahirul subsequently filed a case over the incident at Araihazar Police Station on 29 November. The case is currently pending trial.
The complainant alleged that the accused and others continued trying to kill Zahirul after the earlier attack. Fearing for his safety, he lived in Munshiganj rather than his village, although he occasionally returned to the area for electioneering.
According to the case statement, Zahirul was returning home on foot after closing his pharmacy on 21 October when a group intercepted him on a road near Darus Sunnah Khaled Siddiqui Model Madrasa in Sonargaon around 8:30pm.
The accused, led by Rizvi, allegedly attacked him with machetes, knives, iron rods and sticks, leaving him critically injured before fleeing, believing him to be dead.
Relatives and local residents rescued Zahirul and took him to Munshiganj Sadar General Hospital.
As his condition deteriorated, doctors advised transferring him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but he died before the transfer could be arranged.
Police are conducting operations to arrest the accused, the OC said.
