International hotel group IHG Hotels & Resorts is bringing its Holiday Inn Express & Suites brand to Debrecen, with a new 120-room hotel scheduled to open in 2029. The project, developed in partnership with Hungarian property group Xanga, will be the chain’s first hotel in eastern Hungary.
A new internationally branded hotel is planned for Debrecen, Hungary’s second-largest city, as the eastern Hungarian economic hub continues to attract major investments and business travellers.
IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed an agreement with the Debrecen-based Xanga Group to develop a 120-room Holiday Inn Express & Suites hotel. The property is expected to open in 2029 and will strengthen IHG’s presence outside Budapest.
The project forms part of a wider mixed-use development that will include residential apartments, offices and retail units, reflecting the city’s ongoing expansion.
Where will the new Holiday Inn hotel be built?
According to Turizmus.com, the hotel will be located approximately one kilometre from Debrecen city centre, making it accessible to visitors travelling for both business and leisure.
Designed around the hotel brand’s Next Generation concept, the property will feature 100 modern standard guest rooms and 20 suites. Guests will also have access to complimentary hot breakfast, free Wi-Fi and the brand’s Express Café & Bar facilities.
The combination of standard rooms and larger suites is intended to cater to different types of visitors, including business travellers staying in the city for investment-related projects and tourists exploring eastern Hungary.

Why is Debrecen attracting more hotels?
Debrecen has emerged as one of Hungary’s most important industrial and investment destinations in recent years. Major domestic and international investments, infrastructure improvements and expanding air connections have helped increase demand for accommodation.
The city is a key economic centre for eastern Hungary, and its rapid development has created a growing need for modern hotels operated by recognised international brands.
Willemijn Geels, IHG Hotels & Resorts’ vice-president of development for Europe, said the company was pleased to bring Holiday Inn Express & Suites to Debrecen. She described the city as one of Central Europe’s most dynamically developing urban centres and highlighted the hotel as IHG’s first project in eastern Hungary.
Geels added that the agreement reflected the company’s ambition to expand beyond Budapest and meet growing demand for quality international hotel brands in rapidly developing regional cities.
She also welcomed the partnership with Xanga, describing it as the two companies’ first joint project and expressing hope for a long-term, successful collaboration.

IHG expands its Hungarian hotel portfolio
The planned Debrecen property will be IHG’s second hotel development outside Budapest in Hungary. Holiday Inn Express is the company’s fastest-growing brand, and the new hotel will become its 57th European property offering suites alongside standard rooms.
IHG currently has five operating hotels in Hungary, with another three in preparation.
The Debrecen development is part of the group’s wider strategy to expand in regional cities across Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe, where economic growth is creating new opportunities for internationally recognised accommodation providers.
