By Breaking Belize News Staff: A family dispute over a missing cellphone has reached the police in San Jose Succotz, Cayo, after a 24-year-old construction worker accused his uncle of stealing the device while he slept.
The man reported that he returned home intoxicated and fell asleep on his front verandah around midday. When he awoke several hours later, he discovered that his Redmi 5 cellphone, valued at $300, was missing from his pocket.
The man told police that his aunt had informed him that his uncle allegedly took the phone while he was asleep.
Officers subsequently located and questioned the uncle, who denied taking the device.
Police also spoke with family members but were unable to obtain eyewitness evidence supporting the allegation. One relative clarified that she had not personally witnessed the alleged theft.
The uncle was released without charges due to insufficient evidence. Investigators indicated that an arrest could not be made based solely on hearsay.
The matter remains under investigation.
