Overview
Truecaller uses phone contacts, community reports and AI-based detection to label incoming calls from businesses, suspected spammers and unknown numbers.
The app supports spam call blocking, number searches and message filtering on Android, alongside premium tools such as call assistance and recording.
Truecaller is free to download, although some features require subscriptions. Users should review permissions, data practices and plan prices before signing up.
Truecaller is an app that shows you who is calling before you answer the phone. It checks each number against a large community database and marks calls from spammers, scammers, and telemarketers, so you can ignore or block them. It can also filter spam text messages, search for unknown numbers, and screen calls with an AI assistant. It works on iPhone and Android. Android has a free version, while the iPhone app needs a paid plan for its main features.

Truecaller is made by True Software Scandinavia AB, a company that began in Stockholm in 2009. The app is free to download on both platforms. The latest iPhone version is 26.41, updated in October 2026, and Android builds from the same 26.41 series were also released this month. The iPhone app needs iOS 17.0 or later, and the Android app needs version 8.0 or higher.
Android Official Google Play Store page
It is best to install the app from the App Store or Google Play. Copies from random download sites may be outdated or unsafe, and a caller ID app needs access to sensitive phone data.
About Truecaller
Truecaller was built to give people control over the calls and messages they receive. Company figures reported in late 2025 listed more than 450 million active users, one billion app installs, and 46 billion spam calls identified and blocked. The current App Store listing says the app is trusted by over 500 million users.
The app labels each incoming call as normal, priority, spam, or business. Its caller ID draws on three sources. These are your phone directory, reports from the Truecaller community, and AI that studies the calling patterns of new spammers. If many users report a number as insurance spam, that is the label other users will see when the same number calls them.
Here is what the app can do today.
Identify callers even when the number is not saved in your phone
Block spam and scam calls automatically or by hand
Search any number to find a name and other public details
Filter spam text messages and sort them into groups such as Personal, Other, and Spam on Android
Show Video Caller ID so a short video appears when a chosen contact calls
Screen calls with Truecaller Assistant, a premium voice assistant available in selected countries
Record calls with AI summaries and written transcripts for premium users
Protect family members through a Family Plan that covers up to 4 people
Back up contacts, messages, and settings to Google Drive on Android
Sell travel data plans through Truecaller Travel eSIM in selected markets
The App Store lists the app at 4.4 out of 5 from about 253,000 ratings. Google Play shows 4.4 out of 5 from roughly 28 million ratings, and the Android app has been on the store since May 2012.

How to Use Truecaller
Download and open the app. Get it from the App Store or Google Play.
Allow the permissions. On Android, the app asks you to set Truecaller as your default phone, caller ID, and spam app. On iPhone, open Settings, then Apps, then Phone, then Call Blocking & Identification, and switch Truecaller on.
Verify your number. You need a real phone number, and the app confirms it with a verification call or message.
Create a basic profile. You can keep it simple, for example by adding only your first name and the first letter of your last name.
Check the labels on incoming calls. Spam, business, and priority calls show a clear tag on the screen and later in your call log.
Block or report unwanted numbers. Your report helps the community database and protects other users.
Search unknown numbers. Use the Search tab to paste any number and see who it may belong to.
Review the optional settings. Spam text filtering is optional, so read the permission message before you turn it on.
One tip is worth noting. When you enable message filtering on an iPhone, Apple shows a warning that the developer will receive text and sender details from people who are not in your contacts. This can include bank codes. If that concerns you, leave the feature off and use only call identification.
Pros and Cons of Truecaller
The free Android plan includes caller ID, spam detection, call blocking, and message filtering. Premium plans remove ads and add features such as seeing who viewed your profile, unlimited number lookups, and a Premium badge. In the US App Store, Premium costs USD 9.99 per month or USD 74.99 per year, and a low cost ad free monthly option is also listed. One review from October 2025 reported plans that start at USD 9.99 per month and rise to USD 249 per year for the Gold level. Always check the price inside the app before you confirm.
Truecaller Specifications
Is Truecaller Safe?
Truecaller is a legitimate app from a known company, and reviewers who tested it found it safe to use. It does need access to personal data to work. The App Store privacy details say the app may collect contact information, purchases, coarse location, search history, identifiers, and usage data. The developer states that your phonebook is never made searchable or public. It also says that anyone who looks up your number sees only your name and the public profile details you choose to share.
You can control your data inside the app by opening More and then Privacy Center. From there you can manage your information or deactivate your account at any time. People who are careful about privacy should add only basic profile details and avoid turning on optional features they do not need.
Is Truecaller Worth Using?
For most Android users, yes. The free version gives strong spam protection, clear caller labels, and number search at no cost, and it needs very little effort once it is set up. People who receive many spam or sales calls will probably notice the difference within a few days.
The picture is more mixed on the iPhone. Apple limits how third party apps can handle calls, and Truecaller asks for a paid plan before it turns on caller identification. Reviews on the App Store are generally positive, although a few users report that numbers were not identified as they expected. Your mobile carrier may also offer its own spam filter, which can be a useful extra layer.
If you want a simple way to see who is calling and cut down on unwanted calls, Truecaller is one of the most widely used options. Begin with the free Android version or the free trial offered to new iPhone subscribers, review the permissions carefully, and decide from there.
