Morocco’s education minister has invited representatives of preschool teachers’ unions to a meeting scheduled for Wednesday at the ministry’s headquarters in Rabat, according to union sources.
The invitation follows a series of protests by preschool teachers, which culminated in the dispersal of an overnight sit-in outside Parliament.
The meeting is expected to bring together Mohamed Nabil Benabdellah, minister of national education, preschool education, vocational training and skills development, and Kamal Hachoumi, delegate minister in charge of preschool education and combating school dropout, with representatives of preschool teachers’ unions.
Union sources described the meeting as an important step amid continuing demands for solutions to outstanding professional and socioeconomic issues affecting preschool educators.
The three-union coordination body has been campaigning for the integration of preschool teachers into the public sector, higher wages and an end to the role of intermediary associations in their employment.
