Anna Vissi and Nikos Karvelas remain locked in a bitter dispute more than two weeks after the singer’s major concert at the Olympic Athletic Centre of Athens (OAKA), with her camp accusing the composer of blackmail over an additional €1.5 million payment.
According to reports broadcast by MEGA’s Live News, the two sides are consulting their lawyers and carefully considering their next moves. Meanwhile, the future of the songs that have defined Vissi’s decades-long career remains uncertain, as many bear Karvelas’s signature.
Vissi’s camp alleges demands for an additional €1.5 million
People close to Vissi claim that Karvelas had already received substantial payments before the OAKA concert but subsequently demanded an additional €1.5 million.
“Karvelas demanded €1.5 million in what was absolutely blackmail, even though he had already received approximately €700,000 from the production company over the four months leading up to the concert,” Vissi’s camp told MEGA’s Live News.
The singer’s associates also claim that the production company paid an additional €250,000 in advance to the self-management organisation responsible for collecting royalties, bringing the total amount they cite to approximately €1 million.
They insist that the dispute centres not on the amount Karvelas requested but on the way he presented his demands.
“Anna Vissi did not receive a single euro. If Karvelas had asked for this money nicely, Mr Koustas would have given it to him because he is a generous man who appreciates the work of creators,” her associates said.
Vissi’s camp challenges Karvelas’s account
The account provided by Vissi’s camp contradicts Karvelas’s description of the events that led to their falling-out. The composer has said he received sudden notice that he would not be paid and described the production team’s treatment of him as insulting.
Vissi’s associates, however, argue that the concert’s primary purpose was not to generate financial profit but to stage a major musical event.
“The concert was not about making money. It was about showing that Greece can stage major productions. Whatever Nikos Karvelas asked for, he would have received. But not through blackmail,” they said.
They attribute the production team’s stance to their disagreement over how Karvelas presented his financial demands.
The singer’s camp also maintains that Vissi has always enjoyed a close relationship with the composer and that both she and Giannis and Dimitra Koustas had repeatedly demonstrated their appreciation for him.
“Nobody pushed him out. Nikos Karvelas is not someone anyone can put in his place. Anna has always embraced Karvelas wholeheartedly,” her associates said.
They added that, in their view, the dispute concerns his alleged behaviour rather than the money itself.
Will Anna Vissi still be able to perform Karvelas’s songs?
Beyond the financial disagreement, the next stage of the dispute concerns copyright and the future of Vissi’s repertoire.
Many songs that have shaped her career carry Karvelas’s name as composer, making any potential conflict over their use particularly complex.
According to information reported by MEGA’s Live News, Vissi has no immediate concert plans, while the opening of the nightclub where she is scheduled to perform remains some time away. The report suggests that the lack of imminent live performances removes the immediate pressure to resolve the issue.
However, the question will become more pressing when Vissi resumes performing live. If the two sides fail to reach an agreement on licensing the songs, they may need to explore alternative arrangements, while legal action remains a possibility.
Vissi’s camp acknowledges that any such dispute would prove complicated because Karvelas is closely associated with a large part of her repertoire.
The fee for using his songs and the terms of any potential agreement are expected to become key points in negotiations.
Copyright ownership and the conditions governing public performances remain separate legal issues that require examination under existing agreements and applicable law.
Vissi sends message about the album Apagorevmeno
Amid the dispute, a recent exchange between Vissi and the producer of her album Apagorevmeno has also attracted attention. Karvelas did not compose the album.
The producer publicly praised the singer, describing the song as wonderful and expressing pride in having contributed to its creation.
Vissi responded with a message reflecting on the period of her life when they worked together.
“I am proud that we connected musically during one of the most vulnerable periods of my life. I hope you are doing very well and remain as creative as I remember you always being,” she wrote.
The exchange does not, by itself, indicate what artistic direction Vissi might take next. However, it has attracted interest amid the breakdown of her longstanding musical partnership with Karvelas.
Dispute continues with no resolution in sight
The OAKA concert, which triggered the financial disagreement between the two sides, has become the focal point of a broader dispute.
Karvelas has presented his account of the payment disagreement, while Vissi’s camp rejects his version and accuses him of attempting to impose demands in an unacceptable manner.
“Nobody is talking about Anna Vissi being a victim of blackmail. Our issue is not the €1.5 million, but the coercive nature of the situation,” people close to the singer said.
For now, there are few signs of a meaningful reconciliation. Both sides continue to assess their options with the assistance of their legal representatives.
The central question is whether they can reach a compromise that prevents a court battle or whether Vissi and Karvelas’s decades-long artistic partnership will descend into an even more bitter confrontation.
