Blue jeans can sometimes feel quite casual, especially when they're on the lighter end of the spectrum. Black jeans can sometimes seem too emo (especially the skinny ones that take us back to our Y2k days. Grey jeans are the Goldilocks option: a little bit softer than black, a little smarter than blue.

Dare we say it, they're also a little bit cooler – in fact, they've been rebranded for autumn as the smoky jean as they replicate the cool effect you get from a smudged, smoky eye.

They're also still very much a neutral, which makes the best grey jeans a key hard working piece in your wardrobe. Pair with this season's lipstick reds and burgundies, or keep things neutral with blacks and mink shades. Grey also goes beautifully with a snakeskin shoe.
Below, we've rounded up our favourite styles to shop now from M&S, COS, Zara and more, encompassing grey cigarette jeans, grey barrel-leg jeans, smoky straight-leg styles and more.
The best grey jeans to shop for autumn 2026
These FatFace cigarette-style jeans are great if you like a slight crop. Wear with a slouchy sock and loafer.
Jigsaw calls these a 'washed black', which sounds like grey to us. We still love a barrel-leg jean, thanks to the flattering tapered legs and high waist. These don't have too much of a wide barrel shape, either.
If you're more of a straight-leg grey jean fan, we recommend Massimo Dutti. The premium sister to Zara is a bit of an insider secret at the moment – it's where editors go for quality basics and its jeans are no different.
The skinny jean is definitely back and they're stretchy, so if you want to channel Kate Moss, try these Mint Velvet skinnies. Just add ballet pumps or pirate boots.
If you prefer a wide-leg, head to John Lewis and its own brand, And/Or, for these simple mid-rise jeans.
This is another washed out style that looks more grey than black. Levi's 501s are classics for a reason (they're very popular among Team GH) and they also come in Curve and Cropped versions, although colourways can be more limited.
M&S is our go-to for affordable denim on the high street. We love its barrel and carrot-leg styles but not only do they sell out really quickly, they don't currently come in grey. However this relaxed girlfriend style is a good compromise. They're relaxed but not voluminous and they contain Lyocell, which gives them some stretch. These ones come in short, regular and longer lengths, too.
Uniqlo is another brand we love for affordability and quality. These high-rise straight-leg jeans are actually from its sister brand Comptoir Des Cotonniers, so slightly pricier than core offering, but Comptoir is known for sleek, simple Parisan design, so these jeans are guaranteed to be durable and very hard working.
