Moody’s warns US private debt borrowers masking credit stress with delays

CryptoBriefing

Moody’s has issued a warning about US private debt borrowers who are delaying interest payments and extending maturities, actions that obscure underlying credit stress. The credit rating agency’s assessment indicates that these financial maneuvers are being used to defer defaults, rather than resolve them. Among 607 borrowers monitored, the default rate rose from 4% to 5.8% when considering distressed amendments and maturity extensions. This suggests that headline default rates may understate the true extent of financial distress among these borrowers.

The revelation from Moody’s could have broader implications for companies like NuScale Power, which are navigating a challenging financial landscape. Prediction markets have reacted to this news, with increased attention on the potential for bankruptcy filings. Current market data indicates that the odds of NuScale announcing bankruptcy by the end of 2027 are priced at 10.5%, rising to 27% for a 2030 resolution. These odds reflect concerns over financial instability heightened by Moody’s findings.

The market’s response suggests that market participants are closely monitoring financial health indicators and potential catalysts that could drive NuScale towards financial distress. The company’s leadership, including CEO John L. Hopkins and CFO Ramsey Hamady, remains under the spotlight as they manage operational and financial strategies amidst these challenges.
