According to Birla, the forum marks a new chapter in the history of India’s parliamentary diplomacy.
NEW DELHI: The 12th Brics Parliamentary Forum that India will host on Oct 26-27 is expected to see participation from member-states like Russia, Iran, China, Brazil and the UAE. Iran will be represented by Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.According to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the forum marks a new chapter in the history of India’s parliamentary diplomacy.Talking to reporters Friday, Birla said the forum in India would work towards consensus-based dialogue on the role of Parliament in strengthening institutions, promotion of human-centred innovation in AI and digital technologies through Parliament, more representative system of global governance and role of Parliament in ensuring a sustainable and inclusive future for Brics countries. The meeting will take place against the continued hostilities in the West Asia region. While that issue is not a part of the official agenda, participants may choose to discuss the conflict on the sidelines. Despite the differences between Iran and the UAE, the Brics summit in India last month had concluded with a unanimous declaration.
A meeting of the secretaries of the delegations will be held on Oct 25 to finalise a joint statement for the 12th Brics Parliamentary Forum, according to the Lok Sabha Speaker.
West Asia tensions are unlikely to block the declaration. “India’s Parliament also holds discussions and engages in dialogue with all countries to build consensus. I hope that, with the agreement of all countries, there will be a joint declaration at the Brics Parliamentary Forum as well,” Birla said Thursday.
