Grade A Customary Court, Court 2, sitting in Mapo, Ibdan, Oyo State, has ruled in the divorce suit brought before it by a man, Mukaila against his wife, Aminat, a member of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), whom he alleged was irresponsible, in the habit of drinking herself to stupour and keeping late nights.
Mukaila stated that Aminat constantly neglected him, showed him no love and constantly denied him sex.
According to the plaintiff, the last time he was intimate with the defendant was almost two years ago.
He added that his wife was also indifferent to their children’s welfare.
Mukaila explained that Aminat cared less if their children ate or put on good clothes.
He stated that their children always appeared malnourished and unkempt as a result of her neglect of them.
Mukaila complained that Aminat drank herself to stupor on a daily basis.
The plaintiff added that the defendant hardly slept at home, and that she always returned home at ungodly hours any time she decided to sleep at home.
Mukaila stated that peace had deserted their home as a result of his wife’s waywardness.
The plaintiff told the court he was no longer interested in going any further in his relationship with his wife, and therefore prayed the court to end their relationship.
Mukaila also pleaded for their children’s custody, stating that their mother was not a good example to them.
Aminat pleaded not liable to all the offences when they were read to her on the first day the case was mentioned.
She also agreed that their union be dissolved.

The defendant was absent on the first day the case was heard and the subsequent adjourned dates.
Mukaila, in his evidence, said, “I met my wife in 2002 and she moved in with me.
“We did not celebrate our wedding neither did I pay her bride price.
“Things started falling apart in our home; we have been facing crises since my wife joined the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC).
“My wife abandoned her duties in the home.
“She stopped showing me love and giving me attention.
“My wife also refused to cook for me and our children who now look like a scare crow because they are mal nourished.
“She has been denying me sex for almost two years and failed to consider my sexual and emotional need.
“The more I call my wife’s attention to her neglect of me and our children, the worse she became.
“My lord, my wife now drinks herself to stupor.
“She hardly sleeps at home. Any time she does, she staggers home at ungodly hours under the influence of alcohol.
“My lord, I cannot live under the same roof with my wife any more.
“I am through with my relationship with her.
“I pray this court to rule that we are no longer husband and wife.
“I further plead for our children’s custody because their mother is not a good example to them.”
Giving judgment, the court president, Mrs O.E. Owoseni, stated that the defendant was given ample opportunity to defend herself but she failed to make use of it.
Owoseni further said that the plaintiff’s evidence was deemed admitted.
Ruling, Owoseni declared their union dissolved.
She gave the plaintiff custody of their children.
