Even though he has retired and is now an analyst for ESPN, legendary head coach Nick Saban still casts an enormous shadow over college football. Other college football coaches are still in awe of Saban, who won seven national championships in his career, including one with LSU and six with Alabama.
During “College GameDay,” Utah head coach Morgan Scalley discussed the Utes’ upcoming game against Houston. He also recalled a conversation with Saban that challenged his understanding of defensive football.
“I appreciated my time with you, you humbled me very quickly, in a discussion about Cover 3. I went back from that saying, ‘Holy Cow. I don’t know football,'” Scalley told Saban.
This led the “College GameDay” crew to burst out laughing, with host Desmond Howard telling the Utah head coach, “He does that a lot.” However, Saban came back by complimenting Scalley, saying he was glad he is not a defensive coordinator and facing somebody like him.
Morgan Scalley has been a coach at Utah since 2007, serving as a graduate assistant before going up the ladder as a safeties coach and then defensive coordinator before eventually becoming the head coach. His Utah Utes are still undefeated at 6-0 and are currently ranked No. 10 in the nation.
Morgan Scalley Explains Why He Gave $2 Million Back to Utah
Morgan Scalley, who was a former Utah Utes player, gave back to his old school and current workplace in March, giving $2 million to the Utes football program. During his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” he explained why.
“Utah’s done a ton for me and my family,” Scalley said. “My wife went here. My entire family went to the University of Utah. There’s a lot the Utah family has given us. This is not a Morgan Scalley thing. I said that early on. It’s about Utah football. It’s about the University of Utah. When I’m gone, again, it’ll still be Utah. We wanted to give back and help this community understand that we’re in this together. I’m not going anywhere unless they kick me out of here.”
Other coaches have shelled out some of their own money, with former LSU coach Brian Kelly famously donating to the school’s Excellence Fund in 2024, while UTEP coach Scotty Walden donated $80,000 of his own salary to help with his school’s revenue-sharing this year.
