One regular day of LaLiga, that’s all they are asking for. It did not require fluent Spanish to understand the gravity of Real Madrid’s ‘Comunicado Oficial’ last Friday afternoon. A press release containing mention of Javier Tebas, the LaLiga president, alongside Joseph Goebbels and the “ministro de Propaganda del régimen nazi” signalled a drastic escalation in their long-running dispute with the Spanish league and that tensions with rivals Barcelona had reached a peak ahead of this weekend’s Clasico at Camp Nou.
In the statement, Real Madrid demanded Tebas to resign after he compared the club’s criticism of referees through their in-house TV channel to “propaganda techniques” used by the Nazis during the second world war. The 15-time Champions League winners called the language used by Tebas “deeply offensive” and “morally repugnant”. Tebas, in turn, issued his second lengthy social media post of the day in which he largely doubled down in accusing Real Madrid of “intimidation” and seeking to “destroy” the Spanish league.
Barcelona, unsurprisingly, also had their say as club president Joan Laporta criticised Real Madrid for “constantly attacking” LaLiga. Laporta also praised Tebas for being a “counter’ to Madrid’s accusations, which will have done little to dampen the fire building at the Bernabeu. The Madrid supporters had their say during last weekend’s home win over Sevilla, unveiling a banner that played on a LaLiga marketing slogan with the message: “It’s not football, it’s Tebas and Negreira”.
Once again, the Negreira case is likely to feature prominently as Barcelona host Real Madrid in El Clasico this weekend. Real Madrid have demanded a “full clarification” as to why payments of €7.3m (£6.5m) from Barcelona to Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of the Spanish football federation’s technical committee of referees, were made between 2001 and 2018. Earlier this month Real Madrid sent Uefa a “50,000-page” dossier of documents which they say relate to the “integrity of the competition and confidence in the refereeing system”.
Barcelona and Negreira deny wrongdoing and were cleared by Uefa investigators in 2023. Laporta said the payments related to consultancy work and providing reports on referees – but Real Madrid president Florentino Perez ramped up the pressure in May by accusing Barcelona of “stealing” seven league titles from his club. Relations between the historic rivals are usually fraught but they took a further turn when Barcelona finally withdrew from the European Super League in February, leaving Real Madrid as the only founding member of the project to remain on board.
It’s an interesting time, then, for the first Clasico of the season to roll around, particularly when Camp Nou will also welcome the return of one of its fiercest opponents: Jose Mourinho.
Prepare for ‘war’?
It’s been 15 years since Barcelona and Real Madrid’s modern rivalry arguably reached its peak: when El Clasico offered the contrast of Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho and their clash of styles, the two best managers in the world on the touchline as much of a draw than the best players in the world on the pitch in Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Mourinho would prepare his players for “war”, a tactic that will not be forgotten at Camp Nou and could be deployed again now as Real Madrid attempted to halt a Barcelona side who have scored 50 goals in their first 12 matches of the season. Hansi Flick’s team won their first 11 in a row, until Tuesday’s Champions League defeat at Paris Saint-Germain, and lead Real Madrid by six points in LaLiga. Mourinho can’t afford another defeat now.
It did not take Mourinho long on his return to Spain, however, to play into the narrative that Real Madrid have up against something bigger than just Barcelona. Having suffered their first defeat of the season at Real Betis, Mourinho arrived at his press conference following the heated 2-1 derby defeat at Atletico Madrid holding printouts of the “two clear red cards” Diego Simeone’s team should have received in the first half. Given the attention Mourinho looked to draw towards the two incidents – a studs-up challenge from Cristian Romero on Jude Bellingham’s knee and Lee Kang-in catching Federico Valverde on his ankle – any late challenges in the Clasico which Real Madrid feel are dealt with too leniently or too strongly could be the match that sparks the dynamite.
In between the controversy, it’s easy to forget what the selling point of El Clasico really should be about: the stars. The Premier League may be the most dominant domestic competition in the world but it does not have a fixture that comes close to matching the individual talent on display when Kylian Mbappe faces Lamine Yamal and the midfield battle is decided by either Bellingham or Rodri. The prospect of Yamal enjoying a potential crowning moment at Camp Nou, a night before the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London and in front of a Real Madrid side who were left seething by Vinicius Jr missing out on the award two years ago, adds another delicious storyline into the mix. But the sharp edge to world football’s biggest club fixture is back as well.
