Panama ranks among the richest botanical regions in the Americas due to its position as a land bridge connecting North and South.
The country features over 10,000 vascular plant species, including roughly 1,200 types of orchids, towering 50-meter wild cashew trees, walking palms, and unique carnivorous plants like Genlisea filiformis. This fascinating carnivorus plant has a diet of subterranean prey setting traps underground as opposed to Pitcher plants and Venus flytraps that catch prey above the ground.
Underground Traps: The plant produces highly modified, underground leaves that lack chlorophyll and resemble roots. These leaves are shaped like hollow, spiraling tubes (hence the name “corkscrew plant”)
Prey Selection: It uses these specialized traps to target micro-organisms, specifically protozoans, rotifers, and small soil-dwelling organisms.
The Mechanism: Inward-pointing hairs line the inside of the spiral tubes. These hairs allow tiny aquatic organisms to easily swim inward toward a central digestive chamber but prevent them from escaping. The plant then secretes enzymes to digest the prey and absorb vital nutrients.
Have you ever seen Panama’s national flower? It is the Dove Orchid or Holy Ghost Orchid (scientific name: Peristeria elata), known locally as the Flor del Espíritu Santo.
Key Details
Appearance: It is a waxy, ivory-white orchid with a distinct center structure that looks like a little dove with its wings slightly spread.
Symbolism: Its shape represents the dove of peace, purity, and the Holy Spirit in Christian tradition.
Official Recognition: It was originally adopted as a national symbol in 1936 and formally confirmed by Law 46 on November 21, 1980.
Conservation Status: Due to poaching, the black market, and habitat loss, Peristeria elata is listed on CITES Appendix I and is legally protected in Panama, meaning wild extraction and uncertified trade are banned
Blooming Season: The plant typically blooms between July and October.
What is a walking palm? A walking palm (Socratea exorrhiza) is a slender tropical palm tree native to the rainforests of Central and South America, famous for its unique stilt-like roots that elevate its trunk high above the ground.
