Oracle Health and Life Sciences and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca are partnering to explore how AI can improve clinical trial recruitment, identify patients earlier and bring research insights into clinical care.
The companies have signed a nonbinding term sheet outlining the collaboration, according to an Oct. 20 news release. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The partnership will combine AstraZeneca’s clinical research and regulatory expertise with Oracle’s real-world data, cloud infrastructure and AI capabilities.
The companies said many serious conditions are diagnosed late, patients can wait a long time before being referred and there are gaps in how scientific advances reach clinical practice. The aim is to connect clinical research with healthcare workflows, including identifying patients who may qualify for clinical trials, supporting earlier diagnoses, monitoring drug safety and using real-world evidence throughout drug development.
The companies plan to explore applications across oncology, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases, respiratory and immunology, and rare diseases.
The first planned program will focus on hypertension care and clinical research in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in partnership with healthcare company M42. The initiative aims to help clinicians identify patients with uncontrolled hypertension, support guideline-directed care and improve clinical trial recruitment.
Additional projects are planned across the U.S., Middle East and Europe, with the companies working alongside local governments and within applicable regulations.
The companies said the collaboration will use deidentified real-world data under privacy, security and governance safeguards. AstraZeneca will not receive patient-identifiable information.
Each proposed project will be reviewed separately and will move forward only once legal, privacy, regulatory, ethical and institutional safeguards are in place.
