49ers injury updates: Kyle Juszczyk practices in full; 2 rookies miss
“Wide receiver Mike Evans didn’t practice for the second day in a row. This is likely how it’ll be with Evans this year. Even if he doesn’t practice, he’ll still suit up on game day.
Defensive tackle Gracen Halton missed a second straight day with a quad injury. That’s suboptimal, given the injuries at the position. The 49ers are as thin as you can be at the position. The silver lining is that James Thompson was listed as limited, although that’s not a 1-for-1 swap.
Rookie Romello Height was a new addition after practicing in full on Thursday. Height’s designation is an illness, so the hope is that he’s fine, with the game still 72 hours away.”
49ers’ John Lynch says he’s shopping before NFL trade deadline; Kittle asks about Khalil Mack (paywall)
“When asked on KNBR on Friday morning about the 49ers possibly trading for Mack, 35, Lynch said “a lot of people ask me that” before revealing Kittle posed the question Thursday.
“It’s usually Kittle because he asks about everything, which I love,” Lynch said….“I just like to chirp him and ask what he’s interested in and see if he’ll give me anything,” Kittle said. “So he didn’t really give me a lot yesterday. But me, (fullback Kyle Juszczyk), (left tackle) Trent (Williams), we’ll chirp him just to see if he’ll actually tell us anything. I think he tells Trent the most. Not me, though.”
Examining the 49ers’ early-season feat: Generating pressure without Nick Bosa (paywall)
“This year, Osa Odighizuwa already has 15 pressures after just five games while rookie Gracen Halton has seven. Odighizuwa’s 12.8 percent pass rush win rate ranks 12th at his position among those who have played five games. Halton’s is 9.6 percent, a rate Odighizuwa says ought to climb as Halton, a fourth-round pick, continues to improve his technique. Halton missed Thursday’s practice with a quadriceps injury.
“He’s very raw now,” Odighizuwa said. “So you’re just seeing nothing but upside when you’re watching him play. So it’s exciting stuff.”
John Lynch states 49ers trade discussions have ramped up ahead of deadline
“Just because the flow of the trade deadline is approaching, yes,” he said. “That’s our job to do that, to talk with our counterparts around the league. We receive calls, we make calls, just to see where the market is at.”
Raheem Morris, Klay Kubiak, Brock Purdy share updates ahead of 49ers-Commanders
“It was a lot of fun. I’ll give you a quick story. I remember people asking me, ‘How was it coaching [former NFL WR] Julio Jones?’ I said, ‘It’s easy. Good catch, Julio’ (laughter). No, all joking aside, you were able to take your defensive analysis and bring it to those guys while you were learning how to be a good offensive coach and the detail and everything that’s required. That goes into scoring touchdowns and staying on the field and manufacturing first downs. Being around Kyle that first year on offense, it was really the philosophy of what we’re trying to do on football games and how we’re going to go out there and attack people. I had so much fun being able to be over there with the likes of Kyle Shanahan, [Green Bay Packers head coach] Matt LaFleur, [Arizona Cardinals head coach] Mike LaFleur was on that staff, [Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator] Mike McDaniel. It was a bunch of really great coaches that were teaching me the backend. And in the frontend, you had all the guys on the front end like [assistant head coach/offensive line coach] Chris Foerster and those guys just teaching you what it was like in the run game and what the rules were and everything that was required to go out there and accomplish what we wanted to get accomplished. You can’t help but bring that back to defense when you had to go back over there. So, when I was able to go back and really formulate how I see the game, how I feel the game, how you want to make your players feel the game, that philosophy really helped me a lot to grow. I think everything from the beginning was really helpful for me when it came to offensive football.”
49ers Week 5 Trench Grades: The duality of it all (paywall)
“This week was defined by Gracen Halton dominating and Connor Colby getting dominated. After an encouraging start, Colby is officially a problem. Seattle attacked him, and what’s particularly cool is that I was able to really track that effectively.
Because I logged Byron Murphy II and Leonard Williams as elite players (same for Demarcus Lawrence in the run game), we were able to identify that Seattle got Colby isolated against one of that elite pairing consistently. And he consistently lost. It’s one of the cooler reflections of tape to data thus far this season…..Keion White was a menace, and Romello Height is very clearly starting to cook, club and all. Mykel Williams also had a basic bull rush pressure that became White’s sack. It’s worth noting that Williams exclusively played on the edge this week. That’s easing him back into it. I would be stunned if that doesn’t change as the season goes.”
