“Kanlungan” remains an enduring staple of Philippine popular music, recognized across generations for its emotional weight and social relevance. And while Noel Cabangon has become synonymous with the song, few know the story of the man who wrote it.
Rom Dongeto, the composer of “Kanlungan,” traces his artistic origins to the 1980s protest movement, recounting the song’s journey from an obscure track in the early 1990s to a timeless anthem.
Tondo roots
Dongeto’s activism began in Tondo, where he joined student organizing efforts at Torres High School.
During those formative years, he attended a concert at the University of the Philippines Diliman featuring prominent protest musicians Jess Santiago, Paul Galang, and Susan Fernandez. Watching them perform made him realize that music was far more than just art.
“Na-inspire ako…sabi ko, ‘Ito ang gusto kong gawin. Ito ang gusto kong maging vocation bilang isang aktibista,’” said Dongeto.
(I was inspired…I said, ‘This is what I want to do. This is what I want my vocation to be as an activist.’)
Later in college at Far Eastern University, Dongeto founded the cultural group Sinaglahi, performing across the University Belt and Sta. Mesa.
During this period, he crossed paths with Rene Boncocan, a Fine Arts student at UP Diliman and founder of the artist collective Lingkod Sining.
From Bukluran to Buklod
In the early ’80s, the artist network gave birth to Bukluran ng Musikero para sa Bayan, an alliance of progressive bands, such as Nuklus Band and UP Sintunado, as part of the growing movement against the dictatorship.
As Dongeto described it, “Nagsama-sama ‘yan para lumikha ng mga progresibong kanta, mag-perform sa rallies, makatulong sa consolidation ng protest movement, at makapag-inspire ng marami pang mamamayan.”
(They came together to create progressive songs, perform at rallies, help consolidate the protest movement, and inspire many more people.)
The political landscape shifted dramatically following the assassination of Ninoy Aquino in 1983. The tragedy rapidly accelerated mass mobilizations and galvanized artists, students, and workers nationwide.
Around this time, Dongeto was introduced to folk singer Noel Cabangon through the latter’s activist brother.
“Dahil trabaho kong mag-organize, ‘yon ang ginawa ko. Pinuntahan ko siya sa isang tugtugan sa Kamuning. Kinausap ko siya,” said Dongeto, recalling how he recruited Cabangon to join their growing circle of cultural workers, paving the way for their long-term musical partnership.
(Since my job is to organize, that’s what I did. I went to see him at a gig in Kamuning. I spoke with him.)
EDSA years and beyond
The 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution brought a wave of political uncertainty to the movement, particularly among student activists. At the time, Cabangon was in Malaysia.
Reflecting on the pivotal night Ferdinand Marcos Sr. fled the country, Dongeto found himself in Morayta alongside student leader Lean Alejandro.
“Magkasama kami ni Lean sa Morayta noon…I can still remember Lean was crying noong gabing ‘yon at sinabi niya, ‘Huwag tayong manlulumo, magpapatuloy ang pagkilos,’” he said.
(Lean and I were together in Morayta back then…I can still remember that Lean was crying that night, and he said, ‘Let us not lose heart, the movement will continue.’)
Returning home that night, Dongeto channeled the lingering tension and uncertainty into the lyrics of “Ang Ating Awit,” a track that would later appear on Buklod’s second album, Tatsulok (1991).
In the aftermath of EDSA, Buklod dissolved as an umbrella organization. Dongeto noted that fatigue had likely set in after years of relentless struggle, and many believed that the fight had ended following the fall of the dictatorship.
Dongeto, Cabangon, and Boncocan, however, made a conscious decision to carry on as a musical trio, retaining the name.
“So ang ginawa namin, minaintain namin ‘yong pangalan ng Buklod bilang isang musical organization,” said Dongeto.
(So what we did was, we maintained the name Buklod as a musical organization.)
The illusion of a democratic transition was shattered in January 1987 when state troops under the Aquino administration opened fire on protesting farmers in Manila — a tragedy now known as the Mendiola Massacre.
This incident, according to Dongeto, partly inspired the creation of Buklod’s debut album, Bukid at Buhay (1988), a purely acoustic album which he fondly refers to as “classic Buklod.”
Writing ‘Kanlungan’
“Kanlungan” would ultimately become part of Buklod’s third album, Sa Kandungan ng Kalikasan (1992), a project intended to reach a wider mainstream audience while expanding their advocacy toward environmental awareness.
Writing the song was a fluid experience for Dongeto, taking him just two days to compose it. Unlike earlier protest tracks like “Tatsulok” — where he felt the heavy burden of political analysis through an activist lens — the words and melody for “Kanlungan” simply flowed freely and naturally.
Dongeto noted that he did not feel emotionally or intellectually exhausted after completing it because it came straight from what he was feeling.
Though the song’s vivid imagery leads many listeners to assume Dongeto grew up in a rural coastal town, he clarifies that he wrote it in Tondo using pure creative imagination.
For Dongeto, “Kanlungan” is more than a nostalgic love song; it is an ecological lamentation on fragile ecosystems and human responsibility.
“Meron din siyang lamentation na, ‘Tsong, pag pinakawalan mo ‘to, pag nagkamali ka dito, baka hindi ka na makabalik,’” he shared.
(It features a lamentation, ‘Buddy, if you let this go, if you make a mistake here, you might not be able to come back.)
Dongeto emphasized the direct link between human affection and stewardship of nature: “Kasi gaano man ka-romantiko buhay mo, ‘pag tinamaan ka ng bagyo, bumagsak ang lupa, bumagsak ang bundok, patay ka, ‘di ba? Romantiko ka nga, pero patay ka naman…Kasi kaya tayong lipulin ng pagkakamali natin ‘pag pinabayaan natin ‘yan.”
(No matter how romantic your life may be, if a storm hits, if the ground gives way or a mountain collapses, you’re dead, right? You might be romantic, but you’d be dead… Because our own mistakes can wipe us out if we leave them unaddressed.)
Through its poetic metaphor, the song serves as an urgent reminder to safeguard our shared environment. In the end, no one wants to destroy their own sanctuary, only to be left grieving in the ruins and asking, as the song does: “Maibabalik ba ang kahapon? (Can the past be brought back?)”
Commercial shift and controversy
In 2003, while studying in the United States, Dongeto was surprised to receive a call from the Philippines. It was Cabangon, who wanted to discuss licensing “Kanlungan” for a McDonald’s commercial. After clearing up concerns regarding copyright, Dongeto agreed.
The release of the ad, which reframed the song around familial homecoming, triggered a backlash from national democratic activists.
Critics called the licensing a sellout, given McDonald’s status as a symbol of US imperialism. The friction was further heightened by the ad’s visual narrative, which featured a family member in military uniform — a stark point of contention given the Armed Forces’ long history of human rights violations in the country. Neither Dongeto nor Cabangon knew the commercial’s specific storyline in advance.
Dongeto shared that he understood and respected the sentiments of his fellow activists, but they stood by their decision. They wanted to push the song’s environmental and social themes beyond progressive circles and into the general public, believing that a far wider audience deserved to hear their work.
Beyond the commercial
While the McDonald’s commercial that elevated it to fame has long faded into memory, “Kanlungan” transcended generations to become one of the most beloved Filipino songs. Its mainstream success cemented its status in Philippine culture and sealed Noel Cabangon as its definitive voice.
“Si Noel talaga ang boses ng ‘Kanlungan.’ Kaya nga ang tao ‘pag sinabing ‘Kanlungan,’ si Noel kaagad ang naiisip,” Dongeto acknowledged.
(Noel is truly the voice of ‘Kanlungan.’ That is why, whenever ‘Kanlungan’ is mentioned, people immediately think of Noel.)
“Kanlungan” broke into the mainstream through the commercial world that its creators once stood apart from. Whether that journey represented compromise or cultural victory remains a matter of perspective.
But the song survived the backlash, outgrew the advertisement that made it famous, and acquired a life of its own — continuing to resonate as both a song of longing and a warning against the destruction of our natural sanctuary. – Rappler.com
