For the most part, the Los Angeles Rams did everything right on offense in order to win Monday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills. They put up 454 total yards, converted on seven of their 14 third-down attempts, gained 5.8 yards per play and didn’t turn the ball over a single time.
Matthew Stafford was outstanding, completing 40 of 54 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns with no picks.
And yet, the Rams still managed to lose in overtime because their special teams unit is the worst in the NFL, and their defense couldn’t get a stop when it needed to.
According to Stathead research, the Rams are just the fourth team ever to lose a game with these stats. Previously, teams were 43-3 in such games.
- 375-plus passing yards
- 3-plus touchdown passes
- 0 turnovers
- 2-plus takeaways
Painfully enough, the last team to lose such a game was also the Rams in Week 16 of last season when they blew it against the Seattle Seahawks. In that one, they had 457 yards passing, three touchdown passes, no turnovers and three takeaways.
The other two teams were the 2013 Browns and 2012 Saints. Other than that, no other team in NFL history has lost a game with those numbers.
Additionally, the Rams are the only team in NFL history to lose with 400-plus total yards, 30-plus first downs, five-plus touchdowns, 50% conversion rate on third down and no turnovers.
The Rams are the only team in NFL history to:

amass 400+ total yards
gain 30+ first downs
score 5+ TDs
convert 50% of their 3rd downs
have 0 turnovers
...and yet lose the game.
It’s a sad reminder of just how important it is to play well in all three phases, not just on offense.
