Trump to redevelop 106-year-old DC golf course, plans 15-month closure

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to close Washington, DC’s historic East Potomac Golf Links from November 15 for a 15-month redevelopment, despite an ongoing legal challenge over his administration’s plans to transform the public course into a world-class golfing destination. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump said the Department of the Interior, under Secretary Doug Burgum, had developed the redevelopment plan in collaboration with renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio. The President said the redesigned course would remain open to the public while meeting the standards required to host major international tournaments. The announcement comes amid a legal battle over the project.

A federal judge last week ordered a halt to the redevelopment until at least October 26 after criticising the administration for beginning extensive tree removal at the site over a holiday weekend without adequate notice to the court or the plaintiffs challenging the makeover.Trump did not address the court proceedings in his post, which also included an artist’s rendering of the proposed redesign.

Trump announces redevelopment plan with architect Tom Fazio

Announcing the proposal, Trump said the Department of the Interior had worked with Fazio to develop a plan for a championship golf course at East Potomac Golf Links, a 106-year-old public facility near the White House.

“I am pleased to announce that the Department of the Interior, under the auspices of Secretary Doug Burgum, and in conjunction with famed Golf Course Architect, Tom Fazio, has developed a plan to build a World Class Championship Golf Course on the site of the current East Potomac Golf Links, located in Washington, D.C.,” Trump wrote. He said the redesigned course would be accessible to the public while being capable of hosting some of the sport’s biggest tournaments, including the US Open, the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup.“When completed, it will be open to the Public while, at the same time, designed to the Highest Level of Golf and able to hold World Class Tournaments such as the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, and the Presidents Cup,” he added.Trump also said the United States Golf Association, PGA of America and PGA Tour had been notified about the proposed course and would have it on their list of venues for major events.

Trump cites jobs and economic benefits of golf course makeover

In his post, Trump argued that the redevelopment would generate employment and bring economic benefits to Washington, DC, and surrounding areas.“This Course will create many Jobs, and have a tremendously positive Economic Development impact on Washington, D.C., and the surrounding area. Millions of Dollars will inure to the Capital area,” he wrote. The President, who regularly plays golf, has made the proposed makeover part of a broader effort to renovate prominent sites in the US capital.

Other projects associated with his administration include plans for a large ballroom at the White House, changes at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the construction of a massive arch. Several of these initiatives have faced legal challenges.East Potomac Golf Links has long been a public facility accessible to Washington residents across income groups. Opponents of Trump’s redevelopment plans have argued that turning it into a high-end golfing destination could change its character and make it less affordable for ordinary golfers.

Trump calls existing course unsafe, defends tree removal

Trump described the existing course as being in poor condition and said its infrastructure required major restoration.“The current Course is old, broken, dilapidated, and of no further use or effect. It is in very poor condition, with falling, dangerous, and disease infested trees and, importantly, a collapsing and hazardous seawall,” he wrote. He also defended the removal of hundreds of trees at the site, saying the course had originally been known for having few trees and offering unobstructed views of Washington, DC.“When the East Potomac Course was originally built, it was famous for no trees, with views of Washington, D.C., for all to see, but now, it is completely overgrown, dysfunctional, and unsafe,” Trump said.According to his announcement, restoration work based on Fazio’s design will begin on November 15, when the existing course will close to golfers. Trump said the new course would open in approximately 15 months. The tree removal has become a central issue in the legal dispute.

US District Judge Ana Reyes ordered a halt to the work after an emergency hearing, criticising the administration for failing to provide sufficient notice to the court and the plaintiffs before the trees were cut down, according to AP.The controversy has also drawn attention to debris from the demolition of the White House East Wing, which was cleared to make way for Trump’s planned ballroom. The National Park Service has said the debris tested positive for lead, chromium and other toxic metals.

The material was also reported to have been dumped on the golf course grounds.

Federal judge to examine Trump’s golf course plans

The announcement could complicate a federal court hearing scheduled for Monday in a lawsuit filed by the DC Preservation League and two golfers seeking to stop the redevelopment.Judge Reyes has ordered key members of the administration to testify about the recent tree-cutting operation and whether it was connected to Trump’s plans for the historic public course.During an emergency hearing on October 12, Reyes expressed frustration with the administration’s handling of the tree removal, questioning why the court and the plaintiffs had not been properly notified before the work began. The administration subsequently asked for Reyes to be removed from the case, challenging her impartiality and describing her conduct during the hearing as “egregious”. The judge is expected to address that request at the upcoming proceedings.Meanwhile, the plaintiffs have asked the court to impose a longer-term preliminary injunction or a stay to prevent the redevelopment from proceeding while the legal challenge is considered.
