By Zoila Palma: Personnel from Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) and the Belize Nature Conservation Fund (BNCF) recently visited Cebada Cave, the third section of the Chiquibul Cave System, as part of efforts to protect Belize’s natural and cultural heritage. The visit formed part of a project implemented by FCD with funding from BNCF.
The Chiquibul National Park is home to caves and archaeological sites that preserve evidence of ancient Maya ceremonial practices, traditions, beliefs and way of life. The Chiquibul Cave System is recognized as the largest known cave system in Central America, making the protection and monitoring of its fragile underground environments important to safeguarding the country’s heritage.
The visit highlighted the vital role of FCD’s Karst rangers in documenting, monitoring and protecting these underground environments, with guidance from the Institute of Archaeology under the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH).
