The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have scored a significant victory away from the football field, with owner Jerry Jones' organization agreeing to recognize their newly formed union as their official representative in future contract negotiations.
Announced on Friday, October 23, the development marks an important milestone for one of the most recognizable cheerleading squads in professional sports.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Association (DCCA) will now represent the dancers in collective bargaining with the franchise, giving them a formal route to negotiate pay, benefits and workplace expectations.
The agreement follows years of debate over the compensation offered to cheerleaders, whose performances and public appearances have become a major part of the Cowboys' identity.
However, while the union's recognition is a significant step forward, the two sides have not yet announced a new collective bargaining agreement or any additional salary increases.
In a statement announcing the development, the Cowboys organization praised the squad's contribution to the franchise.
"The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are an esteemed part of the Cowboys organization, deeply respected for the talent and dedication they exhibit," it read. "They remain one of the most sought-after opportunities for talented dancers worldwide."
The announcement quickly attracted attention from fans, many of whom celebrated the cheerleaders' success while questioning why the squad had needed to fight so hard for better compensation in the first place.
How the cheerleaders reached this turning point
The road to union recognition has been shaped by years of complaints about pay and working conditions.
A major moment came in 2019, when the Cowboys settled a lawsuit brought by former cheerleader Erica Wilkins over allegations of unfair compensation. The settlement doubled the game-day rate from $200 to $400 and increased hourly pay.
The issue returned to the spotlight through Netflix's America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
The documentary series offered viewers a closer look at the demanding preparation, physical commitment and pressures associated with making the squad.
The second season, released in 2025, also highlighted the cheerleaders' campaign for higher salaries.
Members reportedly secured a 400% pay increase that year, a substantial improvement after years of concerns about whether their compensation reflected the work involved.
The latest agreement could give the dancers a stronger position in future discussions, rather than leaving individual members to raise concerns without collective representation.
The exact priorities for the first round of negotiations have not yet been announced, but wages, benefits and working conditions are central issues the union can address.
Fans were quick to express their support online. One supporter celebrated the decision while taking a dig at the struggling football team, writing: "Good. They deserve better pay since they are the only ones on the team that win."
Another fan focused on the financial side of the announcement, posting: "That's amazing. Their pay and benefits are ridiculous. Get that bag, ladies."
A further supporter drew on personal experience as a dancer, writing: "As someone who was paid $25 a game dancing for the Chicago Bulls, I love this," adding, "Cheerleaders and dancers bring a lot of entertainment value to events, and it's about time they're not only appreciated, but paid!"
Others expressed hope that the development could inspire similar changes across professional sports.
One fan wrote: "Hopefully this will evolve into an NFL cheer union so every NFL Cheer squad can be in it. It'll be like how the players have the NFLPA."
The Cowboys cheerleaders' growing visibility has helped bring these concerns to a much wider audience.
Their Netflix exposure has turned the squad into a recognizable entertainment brand, while also drawing attention to the difference between their public profile and the compensation they historically received.
The wider significance is clear: union recognition gives the cheerleaders a collective voice, although it does not guarantee that every demand will be accepted. The eventual outcome will depend on negotiations between the DCCA and the Cowboys.
Meanwhile, the football team has its own problems to solve. Dallas entered Week 7 with a 2-4 record following a 23-13 defeat to the Green Bay Packers. The Cowboys are scheduled to face the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, October 26, at 8:15 p.m. ET.
For the cheerleaders, however, the union announcement represents progress after years of campaigning. The next step is turning that recognition into a contract that reflects their contribution to one of the NFL's biggest franchises.
