On Thursday, President Donald Trump took a break from a war with Iran and from stumping for Republican election candidates to go after an unexpected target: NBA icon LeBron James.
The job of the President of the United States is very time-consuming. However, the current holder of the position is busier than usual with the mid-term elections less than two weeks away. Plus, Trump is also a bit busy with an ongoing war in Iran that has no clear end in sight.
With his decisions over his first two years in his second term enraging some voters who seem to be leaning Democrat ahead of the election, Trump has taken his work on the road as he tries to make the case to voters to pick Republicans on Nov. 3.
Yet, what has always made President Trump different from his predecessors is that he’s always willing to make time in what should be a busy schedule for his personal passions. These usually center on construction projects or letting certain individuals know how unhappy he is with them.
That was again the case today when the President took time out of his day to air some public grievances on Truth Social about a certain NBA legend.
“While listening to our National Anthem, LeBron James disrespects our Country!” President Trump proclaimed in his post. “I said right from the beginning that he’s no good, a TOTAL DISGRACE. LeBron James should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag, and all that our Country stands for! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
The moment that made the 80-year-old lose it was a clip of James from Tuesday’s Philadelphia 76ers season-opening game against the New York Knicks. In the video that is now going viral, the caption suggests that the 22-time All-Star was practicing his golf show while the National Anthem was being sung.
It is possible he was doing exactly that. However, he might have also been stretching, because he also practiced his shot as well. Was it in good taste for James not to be standing with hand on heart during the anthem? Yes, but athletes getting in some final stretches or work during the anthem is not shocking. Nor is fans going to concession stands to get a beer either.
Trump’s war on anthem appreciation has been going on for years and dates back to his rage over former San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and other athletes taking a knee in protest during the national anthem.
