The global AI trade is losing steam, and nobody is feeling it quite like China.
The Star 50 index, Shanghai’s flagship gauge for tech and innovation stocks, has dropped nearly 40% in 2026. That makes it the worst-performing major tech index anywhere in the world, according to Bloomberg data.
The pain isn’t evenly spread, though. Chinese companies selling into overseas markets are doing just fine. The ones relying on the home market are getting hammered.
A tale of two China tech trades
Start with the losers. MetaX, one of China’s homegrown chip designers, has lost around 50% of its value this year.
Moore Threads, another domestic chipmaker positioned as a local alternative to foreign AI hardware, has seen a ~25% drop in shares in 2026.
The damage extends well beyond chips. SenseTime, a long-standing name in Chinese computer vision and AI models, is down 40% this year.
Kuaishou, the short-video platform that has been pushing into AI tools, has fallen 51%.
The hardware-focused ChiNext index, Shenzhen’s growth board, has dropped 36% during the sell-off.
Now flip the coin. A Bloomberg gauge tracking 30 Chinese tech stocks with heavy overseas revenue exposure has climbed 36% in 2026. Domestically focused peers, by comparison, managed a gain of just 9%.
Optical transceiver makers are the clearest example. These companies build the components that move data between servers in AI data centers. Some of them reported that 90-96% of their revenue came from overseas earlier in 2026.
How the Star 50 went from darling to laggard
In early 2026, the Star 50 surged on expectations that China would claim a meaningful slice of a fast-growing global AI market. Investors piled into domestic chip designers and AI model developers. Valuations climbed to levels that left little room for anything to go wrong.
Then foreign investors began pulling money out of A-shares, the mainland-listed stocks traded in yuan. With valuations already stretched, that retreat turned a cooling trade into a full-blown sell-off.
Fierce competition at home made things worse. China’s AI sector is crowded, with many firms chasing the same customers and the same use cases. Poor results from major chipmakers and domestically oriented firms added to the selling pressure.
What this means for investors and Beijing’s AI ambitions
The most obvious takeaway is that China’s tech sector has split into two distinct camps, and the dividing line is geography of revenue rather than technology.
Companies plugged into global AI supply chains are benefiting from spending decisions made far outside China. Their fortunes track the worldwide data center buildout, not domestic sentiment or local price wars.
Domestic champions face a much tougher setup. They carry the weight of China’s self-sufficiency push, but they also absorb the full force of local competition and shifting investor appetite.
For investors, the research points toward a possible rethink in how Chinese tech exposure gets built. Companies with substantial overseas revenue have offered a buffer against domestic turbulence this year, with a 36% gain versus just 9% for domestically focused peers.
