A woman has died after being stabbed repeatedly in a residential complex in Madrid, with police arresting a man suspected of killing her as investigators examine whether the attack was linked to gender-based violence.
The 52-year-old was attacked on Tuesday afternoon, October 20, in the entrance area of a residential development on Calle Ontanilla, in the Carabanchel district of the Spanish capital.
The woman suffered multiple stab wounds, mainly to her chest and abdomen. Emergency teams managed to restart her heart after she went into cardiac arrest, but she later died in hospital.
The arrest was confirmed on Wednesday, October 21, after police identified a suspect and launched a search operation.
Woman rushed to hospital in critical condition
The emergency response began at around 2.45pm on Tuesday, when Madrid’s police command centre received a report of an injured person in the street.
Paramedics from Samur-Protección Civil and Summa 112 attended the scene and found the woman suffering from serious injuries. She was treated at the scene before being taken to Madrid’s 12 de Octubre Hospital in a critical condition.
Despite the efforts of medical teams, she could not be saved.
National Police officers from the homicide unit and forensic investigators were sent to the residential complex to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack. Madrid Municipal Police also assisted at the scene.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about violence against women in Spain, where gender-based killings remain a major issue for authorities and support organisations.
Suspect found during police search
Following enquiries, investigators identified a man suspected of being responsible for the killing and organised a search to locate him.
He was eventually found inside his vehicle by officers from the National Police’s Operational Response Group, attached to the Usera-Villaverde district station. The arrest took place at the junction of Calle Montejo and Calle Ciudad de Frías, in Madrid.
He has been detained on suspicion of homicide. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the killing, which is being treated as a possible case of gender-based violence.
Reports have identified the victim as being originally from Guatemala. Investigators are working to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the attack and the relationship between the woman and the suspect.
Spain continues fight against violence against women
The case comes amid continued efforts by Spanish authorities to tackle violence against women, including killings allegedly committed by current or former partners.
Spain has developed a system of legal protections, specialist services and public awareness campaigns aimed at preventing gender-based violence and supporting victims. However, fatal attacks continue to highlight the dangers faced by women and the importance of reporting threats and abuse.
Anyone in Spain experiencing gender-based violence, or concerned about someone who may be at risk, can contact the 016 helpline for information, advice and support. The service is free and confidential, and calls do not appear on telephone bills, although they may remain in the device’s call history.
The investigation into the Carabanchel killing remains ongoing as police seek to establish exactly what happened before the fatal attack.
