When the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame holds its 2026 induction on Oct. 26, the honorees will include people whose songs are willing to show their age.
Lee Thomas Miller co-wrote Trace Adkins’ “You’re Gonna Miss This,” in which an older repairman passes wisdom about the kids growing up to a flustered young mother. Bruce Channel co-authored John Conlee’s “As Long As I’m Rockin’ With You,” a 1984 ballad with a protagonist who’s come to accept his future rockin’-chair years after finding his soul mate. Singer-songwriter Shawn Camp fashioned an entire album, The Ghost of Sis Draper, around the semi-fictitious treatment of a real-life fiddler from an older generation that he met as a kid, building it primarily around songs penned with Guy Clark, some of them while Clark was in his later years.
George Strait, set to receive the Hall of Fame’s career maker award, addressed the passage of time in an entertainer’s life with his 2008 hit “Troubadour.” And even Taylor Swift, the former teen star who is now 36, has acknowledged the ticking clock with a number of songs — including “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version),” “You’re On Your Own, Kid” and “Nothing New (Taylor’s Version)” — that either address adulthood by looking back nostalgically at past youth tales or admit fear about moving into the next life phase.
Songs about aging are not unique to country, but they seem to be more prevalent in the genre than in other formats.
“In country music, it’s so much storytelling, and it’s so much writing what you know, which is the best approach, in my opinion,” says Strait afficionado Parker McCollum. “When you’re talking about real life and you’re writing songs from a real place, everybody’s getting older all the time, so that’s going to seep into those songs at some point.”
True enough, but that doesn’t make it easy. The global market for anti-aging products — including anti-wrinkle creams, plastic surgery and hair restoration — was nearly $78 billion in 2025, according to a study by Precedence Research. The market is expected to approach $150 billion by 2035.
People are clearly resistant to growing old, which makes singing about life’s final stage a challenge. Still, “time is gonna do what it always does,” as Dan + Shay sing in the title track of their current album, Young. It moves on, dragging reluctant populations with it until some of those folks come to accept the ticking of the clock, a phenomenon that feeds Lorrie Morgan’s “Something in Red,” K.T. Oslin’s “80’s Ladies” and Tracy Lawrence’s “Time Marches On” — songs with storylines that play out across decades.
“That’s one of the things that I love so much about country music, as opposed to the poppier things that are about living in the moment and the partying lifestyle,” Lawrence says. “As you get into the depth of what a real true song is, you can sync the words up with visual imagery.”
It’s true that other formats don’t seem to tackle aging as much, though the subject is not entirely removed from pop and rock. The Beatles’ “When I’m 64,” Frank Sinatra’s “It was a Very Good Year,” Bob Seger’s “Against the Wind” and Neil Young’s “Old Man” address the process with a fairly healthy attitude. Harry Chapin was a master, exploring middle-age and senior realities in “Cat’s in the Cradle,” “Taxi” and the radio tale “WOLD,” featuring a 45-year-old spinning 45 rpm records for 15 year-olds. The Who, of course, dismissed aging entirely, snarling “Hope I die before I get old” in “My Generation.” The band’s survivors, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, are amusingly now members of the older generation.
While rock musicians can dive into aging, that theme is “less central to the genre’s core identity than in country,” notes FEMco founder Leslie Fram, who’s worked in both formats. “Country music has historically been more grown-up in its storytelling. It has long focused on adult realities — work, marriage and divorce, family, regret, mortality, the body wearing down, and the everyday limits of life — rather than the perpetual youth, rebellion or romantic idealism that powered much of rock’s mythology.”
The current model of country doesn’t seem to address aging as much as it once did. Luke Bryan’s “Fast,” Luke Combs’ “Growin’ Up and Growin’ Old,” Carly Pearce’s “Dream Come True,” Toby Keith’s “Don’t Let the Old Man In” and Jordan Davis’ “Buy Dirt” (recorded with Bryan) still look at it honestly. But it was more prevalent in another era, through Charlie Rich’s “Rollin’ with the Flow,” George Jones’ “Same Ole Me,” The Judds’ “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days),” Conlee’s “Back Side of Thirty” and Randy Travis’ “He Walked on Water.”
Sometimes, country has examined older life passages with a bit of a wink, particularly in Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Middle Age Crazy” and John Anderson’s portrait of a past-his-prime singer, “Would You Catch a Falling Star.” Willie Nelson, 93, has dealt more frequently with senior issues in his recordings from the last 10-15 years, eliciting laughter over the subject with his self-deprecating 2017 title “Still Not Dead.”
On the other end of the spectrum, though, the genre’s creators have dug in periodically on the hardest parts of growing old. “I hate it when they say I’m aging gracefully,” Matraca Berg laments in “Back When We Were Beautiful,” confessing subtly to physical deterioration.
It’s the mental slide that is hardest to convey without being morbid. Brett Eldredge handled it with dignity in his debut single “Raymond,” and in “Sunday Drive,” Kathy Mattea’s “Where’ve You Been” vividly laid out its lead characters’ memory loss in two succinct lines, and Nashville’s Sheryl Crow made it sound quasi-spiritual in her 2020 song “Disappearing World.” Crow looks at it, though, as part of a process, noting that songs about aging are really about “letting go.”
“I have a song that’s written about your kids growing up, and I have a song about my mom losing all of her memories,” she says. “The reality of it is, though, country singers could write three chords and the truth, and that song will get heard. I think in pop and rock and other formats, by the time you get to be my age, if you ever got a song [like that] heard, it would be absolutely miraculous.”
There are, perhaps, two factors at work. The most obvious is the emotion around the topic — as natural as it is, aging is uncomfortable, and many would prefer to act as if it’s not an issue. But aging is accompanied by experience. Older adults can relate to a song about living for today because they’ve been through it — it offers nostalgia. But a kid can’t completely grasp the emotions that come when someone discovers a new age spot or has to pause on a staircase they used to navigate with ease, because they haven’t experienced it. Yet.
That’s the magic that songs about aging provide. A senior can relate to a song about aging firsthand. That younger listener, if they’re willing to hear it, can see someone else’s experience and prepare — at least a little — for their own future. The day will come for most that they begin to better understand what “Time Marches On” and “Troubadour” and “Still Not Dead” were all about, because they will have become the people in those songs. They’ll experience what those songs were about by growing into them.
“If you’re going to tell stories about life,” says Lee Thomas Miller, “Mom and Dad are getting older and — oh my God — I’m getting older, and the kids are grown up. ‘Oh, that happened fast.’ You aren’t 22 very long, you know, and then the hair turns gray. It’s just real stuff.”
